leaking air from my dump valve

MountainMike

Accelerating Away
My air cleaner dump valve has perished and split and at idle I get a lot of air escaping. Is this normal? Can I leave it like this or should I block it off. Its gunna be a while till I can get hold of a new one and I don't want to do anything stupid.

Oooo I'd replace that! Because it is in the engine bay it'll be sucking in dirty hot air. Do you get much rain in Israel? if you don't then just block the dump valve off!

Thanks Geo, Yea it rains here too, and when it does it pours, no drizzle here just storms and floods sounds crazy I know but there are even flashfloods in the dessert, anyway you say I should block it off for the time being ? I have a snorkle fitted so water in the filter isn't a prob. Is that the dump valves job? To take out water from the filter?
Mike

I would Just block it off,in fact i have just blocked mine off, the valve is to let the water out of the filter housing should any get in there, if you have a really heavy down pour,if your worried about it, simply open the filter housing, with engine off and let any, if any water out..

Cheers

Well if you have a snorkle fitted you should block that dump valve off anyway! If you have a safari top then turn it around backwards so the water doesn't get sucked in. I have mine facing backwards all the time!

I'd still blank off that valve!

The dump valve allows you to remove excess dust (or water) that may collect in the bottom of the filtre housing. However it is on the "outside" of the filtre, so any dusty air that you're pulling in through it is being filtred as it is drawn into the carb (or whatever you're running with). So I wouldn't have thought there is any big problem keepig it open for a short while.

But what the heck - neither is there any big problem in blocking it off, as long as you remember to keep your filtre services regular!

Cheers.
