Losing Power Uphill

Fionat29

First Gear
Hi there, please forgive any mistakes but I am a newbie with a bit of a Landie problem.
I have a Discovery TD5 1999.
Yesterday, I was towing a trailer and noticed a problem when going uphill. I was travelling at about 50mph when I wanted to overtake a tractor in the inside lane. I put my foot down but instead of changing down a gear, the engine just seemed to rev and lose power over and over, when I take my foot off the throttle it all calms down but it's a bit unnerving thinking that you might not be able to accelerate out of trouble if you need to.
Some people have suggested it's the diesel filter and someone else said it's to do with the air intake?? I thought I would come on here and get some "expert " advice!!

try a general engine service , oil change, filters, seems odd , you should have posted in the discovery forum but this may be a better place because in the series problem we tend to have more experience loosing power :)

I agree with fergus123 try the disco section. However in my day with an automatic I would have checked the transmission fluid levels. Sounds low.

Just a thought.

PS welcome to the forum.

Hi Welcome to the Forum and you will get a lot of things to go check and if you have not had the car serviced by a good landie specialist (not dealer) for a while you will likely find a load of nice suggestions to get your car back to tip top condition .

First thing to remember as the TD5 is fly by wire (e.g. Computer Controlled) so almost all these sorts of issues may appear rather alarming but most are pretty trivial to fix .. its just identifying the cause that is a problem. That said there are loads of us here who have been there so with a few steps you can get this sorted. Are you willing to get your hands a "little" dirty here or just want to know what to tell your garage ?

Now the Tech . Sounds like "Turbo Overboost" to me . But there a lot of issues that can trigger this , non of them "serious" just you are going to have to do a little bit of trial and error if you dont want to just give it to your local "experts" to spend a fortune in time and money doing the work.

Try first removing the connection to your MAF sensor . Does that sort it out . If so that is broken , either leave it disconnected which will allow you to run with a "decent" level of performance or get a new one . Is the Loom protection for the wiring to the MAF secure and intact . In particular around the Air Conditioning pump if you have that .

See how that helps.

Other useful things to look into that you will certainly need to do .

Oil in your Injector Loom.
Possible Fuel Pressure Regulator problem
Fuel Filter Change
Turbo Modulator Valve
Clean up the MAP sensor.

All will impact this .. but assuming this is an acute issue that has come on suddenly rather than something you always had .. go for the MAF first.

Hope that helps.

? intercooler leak?
my defender td5 about same age had this problem- the intercooler was distorted and leaking- (seen as dripping black oil) so loosing turbo pressure.

or possibly a split intercooler /turbo hose
