More on 1.2 ratio vs overdrive

Accelerating Away
Hi,

I've only been towing about a ton and a half today and despite the tune i've got, hill starts were quite a challenge with the Disco transfer box. Absolutely no issues when i was rolling but getting moving required revs and a bit of judicious clutch slipping. :frown2:

My advice is that if you tow a bit in a TD5 with medium size loads upwards, then you would be better off having an overdrive so you had a lower first gear to get rolling or if you're really flash, get an Auto!

Just my latest opinion.........

Indeed, the transfer box is designed so you can switch from low to high whilst on the move, for that exact purpose.. Once you get used to doing it, you can even do it without too much of a crunch! It's high to low you're supposed to stop for.

I always find that on the move ratio swap difficult - guess I need more practice!
However with my old Tdi on std transfer ratios, this pulling off just wasn't an issue. Maybe some of it is getting used to the different torque delivery of the engine as well.

The TD5 feels flat as a ph**t off the line - and the torque is pretty peaky too compared to ye olde Tdi.

I'd have a little practice at doing the low/high swap thing of the move. Personally I wouldn't use 5th in low ratio towing a heavy load - the cog is mighty small. I'd start in low 2nd perhaps, then straight into low 4th and swap boxes into your taller high ratio 2nd gear.

Or you could get an auto like mine!

Arent TD5's supposed to have an anti-stall feature???

Cant say Ive ever needed to use it but I think Ive heard it only works when your foot isnt on the accelerator.

So... when towing, would it not be possible to let the clutch out without any gas (letting the ECU doe the hard work) and once rolling, press the loud pedal?? Just a thought, like I say, never (needed to) try it.

Possibly - and easily done with no load - but I would have thought that you need to put some torque down to get the rig moving, which just isn't available at idle. Any TD5 owners tried it?

I'm with you on this, I fitted our overdrive just before christmas and it is perfect for towing the car trailer and all the rally crap! :)

I'm so glad I didn't go for the higher ratio transfer gears, we'd have been done for on long motorway climbs!

70MPH is 2500RPM = Same MPG as 62MPH with no overdrive.

Its much quieter and worth every penny for that alone!

lower stress on motor and three extra 1/2 gears for use when towing .

I should have bought one when the 110 was new, it would have been paid for by now.

it goes on the back of the transferbox I think... where the blanking plate is.. dunno how it works mind, It's got more of them horible wires and an onimous black box whith plugs on it. I'd get one just for the gearknob with the swtich on it (james bond style)

the switch would either be wired to the overdrive solinoid...or machine guns under the vent flaps :D:D

I'd like a V8 with LPG and a supercharger...maybe a homemade afterburner.. and for the landrover a 16 cylinger bugati engine....the one that can push a car to 250miles an hour... I'd say that'd make the landy do about 90 :D:D

BIG STATEMENT FROM MR T COMING NOW...THIS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY (clears throat) *ahem AHEM*

"If I couldnt buy an Overdrive for my 90.....I wouldnt buy a 90!!!" :-O!!!!!!

Best piece of kit EVER installed to my TD5.
