Mortified of Trethomas

My da would be turning in his grave.

We were out on our bikes today, cycling down the promenade, and we met some English-speaking acquaintances.

I said something about taffies and she said "What's one of those?".

I thought she was joking:eek: , but after five minutes it was clear she was serious, and she was Scottish (by way of australia).

Absolutely no racism intended here but I have always been called taffy. Wherever I have lived, and I have not been offended.

Am I missing something? Are Welsh people no longer called taffy, or is it now seen as an insult?:confused:

It`s not used much up here in Scotland Adrian. I think it`s kind of skipped a
generation. In fact the Welsh aren`t discussed much at all and I`m not being funny.

Alex

I would have said it was a term from the first half of the 20th century that has just fallen out of use. Nowadays of course there is always the risk of some twerp calling you a racist for using it.

It tends to be aimed at south walians more than north walians and I've even heard local people in north wales calling south walians taffys.

You mean a bit like this B######s on big brother, i mean!!!

Doesn't it come from the River Taff running through Cardiff?

Chris

possibly though the taff starts as 2 streams Taff Mawr and Taff bach (meaning big and little taff ) up in the breacon beacons and runs down a sizeable chunk of mid and south wales through merthyr tyddfil and pontypridd before arriving at Cardiff and emptying into the Bristol channel.

taffy goes all the way back to the old celtic legends when one of the gods stole from another.

there was a nursery rhyme that the english used to sing and I've pasted it here not out of any racist point of view but to give people an idea of where the term came from.

Taffy was a Welshman,
Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house And stole a piece of beef.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not home;
Taffy came to my house And stole a marrow bone.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not in;
Taffy came to my house And stole a silver pin.

I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was in bed;
I took up a poker
And threw it at his head.

Haven't heard it used for years, but would agree that last time was by a "gog" talking about a South Walian.

gog = gogledd = north.
An "impolite" turn used by South Walians about those from the North

There was ofcourse the old rhyme,
Taffy was Welsh man
Taffy was a theif
etc

I know a couple of people living in Warrington who are still called Taff, one from North Wales the other from the valleys boyo.

They both introduce themselves as Taff.

And, of course, the gogs refer to those from the south as 'The English'.

I'll get me coat, now!:D
Regards,

It is often used in the forces where nicknames are very common .

We are right next to North Wales here in Shropshire, don't here it much at all.

funny you say that,and it cant be very nice that the welsh have almost been forgoton about .
i realy canot remember the last time welsh folk got a real menshion apart from torchwood!

But calling someone Gungadin, Sambo or, heaven forbid, Chalky, could get you into trouble. So where is the equality?

Equality doesn't exist in any society. you don't seriously think we live in a state that practises what it preaches, do you? Oh they might make all the right noise's. But equality is the last thing they're interested in. Profits and capitalism are what drive most states and certainly all the so called 'democratic' ones.

That being said Kram they`ve put themselves on the music map with some good rockbands in the last few years:D

I visit Bangor University once a week, and spend a lot of time in Wales, mostly Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire and I must admit I have never heard welsh folk discuss Scottish people either, how strange!
