Nearside rear indicator problem

In Second Gear
Hi,

I have done a quick search for this problem and found some answers to a similar problem but related to a Defender so hope you don't mind me asking here. I've never had any experience with fixing things on my cars before but I really like my Freelander and I want to learn how to keep it well maintained as much as I can.

My problem is that my nearside rear indicator doesn't work at all, either while indicating, when the hazards are on or when locking the car. The front indicator and the light on the dashboard flash double speed.

I have tried replacing the bulb but it hasn't solved the problem. It looks like the connections in the holder are a little corroded though, could this be the problem? If not could it be the relay or fuse? Are they easy to change myself? I would like to avoid taking it to the garage if possible so would appreciate any help you could give me. Forgive my lack of knowledge, I'm very new to this but as I say I want to learn.

It's a Freelander 1 I believe (X Reg), if that helps.

Thank you.

Chris :)

Indicators double time generally suggest the bulb has blown. So it could be a dodgy new bulb (it happens) or the connectors need a good clean and possible adjustment. If there is any corrosion on the contacts just use something to scrape it off until bare metal.

Thank you. I've tried scraping off the corrosion and cleaned it with WD40. I don't know if this is supposed to happen but the metal connector at the bottom of the holder falls out. I'm guessing it shouldn't?

Trip to the local scrap yard methinks for a serviceable indicator unit. Metal connector being U/S sounds like the problem. When you get the new unit make sure it hasn't leaked (They often do). Put a bit of fish tank sealer on it when you replace the lens to keep it as water tight as possible.
