New dog in the house.

K&S

Big Landy Fan
We've just adopted a new dog from the SPCA to keep our present german shepherd company. The german shepherd has really been looking lonely during the day despite all the walks and play and training we give her.

So we got a yellow labrador of about two years old (same age as the g shepherd). We've had him one day now and what an amazingly friendly dog. I've read up about labradors on a number of sites and he seems to epitomise what the breed is all about. Doesn't seem to have an aggressive bone in his body. Every dog and every person he meets he sees as a friend to play with. This is a far cry from the german shepherd whose instinct is to protect me against all comers. Oh yes and to protect the landy at all costs. If she is in the landy no strangers can come near. Here in South Africa the parking lots have unemployed people as car guards, receiving tips if you find your car still in place! One of these chaps walked up to the landy with me and backed off very quickly when confronted by much aggressive barking and raised hackles.

The two dogs fortunatey hit it off very well and charge around the place like mad things and we'll see which has the most energy and which one collapses first.

Stevo, I've just read your thread and hope things go better with your situation with your dogs.

If you read my reply to Stevos query you will see we happily had a labrador (black although I'm not sure colour is relevant) with a GSD for years and never a problem with the two. Sounds like similar types of temperaments to the ones you have described above. Both were wonderful dogs. I'm sure yours will get on great together. Adrian

"Labs" get on with everyone. They're beautiful dogs for families and I've always had a soft spot for them. In a perfect world, I'd have a Shepherd for training, a Rotti for scare value, a Lab for farting and sleeping in front of the fire, and a beagle for actually guarding the house. :D

I'm sure your dogs will soon sort out the heirarchy in the pack, and hopefully it all goes smoothly.

Post a few pics of the dogs...

We have a well tempered golden labrador. Even at eight or so human years he still enjoys being chased around the coffee table, running for frisbees, playing tug-of-war with various toys and can still manage two hour walks with extreme enthusiasm. Your Labrador, if similar, should keep your German Shepherd occupied for quite some time. :)
