Shifting Up
Hi

We bought a 2000 plate 1.8XEi 3 door just after Christmas with 39k on the clock. The dealer replaced the cambelt, Cylinder Head Gasket, Cylinder head bolts and had the cylinder head preassure tested and skimmed. We picked it up last Wednesday.

This morning we could not start the car due to a dead battery. the RAC got us going then fitted a new battery. While checking everything over he said that there was an ABS fault as indicated on the dash.

Having looked at the manual I am a little confused about the warning light.

The Manaul states that the ABS warnig light comes on when you turn on the ignition, then goes off for 1 second then back on again until you reach a speed of 5mph when it should go off. If the light stays on or comes on while driving then there is a fault.

What we are seeing is that the light comes on and does not go off until we are driving.

Is this a fault or not?

Regards

Dave

The light comes on and will stay on for a short while. It can take about 1/2 a mile sometimes before it goes off. As long as it goes off, it's OK.

Thanks Chris!

That is a load off my mind - as soon as we hit 5 mph it goes off and stays off!

Yes, you need to do a certain speed in order to have the ABS light go out as the sensors are of the passive kind and need activation by rotating wheels at a certain speed, I believe the later editions have active sensors and does the ABS light go out even without moving the car ?

Welcome to the wonderful world of the ideosincratic Freelander.

Good init?

Leaning fast! - glad I have full RAC cover!

The first thing that really worried me when the battery died was the rear window wound down and we could not get it back up (until we read the manual)

We bought the Freelander because we want to do a lot more camping and hiking this year and did not want to take the Volvo S40 too much off road as it not really happy off tramac!

Lets hope the hiking is for pleasure rather than looking for a garage!

That does make sense. I was just a little confused by the manual which said that the light should go off for a second or two during the self diagnostics and if it doesn't there is a fault.
