No spark series 11a

jonesy

In Second Gear
Hi folks can anyone help - I started my series 11a 21/4 petrol a couple of weeks ago and it fired and died and wouldn't start again. Since then I have replaced the plugs, points, condenser, dist. cap, rotor arm and coil. There is still no spark whatsoever. Ignition and cold start lights come on so low tension circuit appears to be OK, it turns over but obviously will not start because no spark. Any more ideas?

Have you checked for voltage at the coil? Depending on ballast or unballasted circuit you should get 7v / 12v respectively!

Checking the ignition circuit is easiest done with a light bulb soldered to a couple of lengths of wire, firstly check there is a voltage supply to the coil between the + terminal and earth, then remove both wires from the coil and replace with the light bulb, turn the engine over and the bulb should flash off and on, if it does you have a coil or high tension fault so re-connect the coil, and see if you have a spark at the distributor end of the king lead by holding it a couple of mm from earth while the engine is cranked over if you have a spark here, the fault is rotor arm cap, leads or plugs, nowdays new parts are no gurantee that they work and the best option may be to re-fit your old ones.

If the light bulb was on all the time you have a short to earth somewhere in the low tension wiring or points/ condensor.

If the light bulb did not come on then you have a break in the low tension circuit, a fault in the points / condensor or the distributor base plate does not earth properly.
