Accelerating Away
I'm getting a lot of noise every time I change gear and get punished by a clunk every time I'm heavy footed with the accelerator , the rear axle hubs are playing catchup with the axle and need changing.
Two Questions:
1) Easy job to replace? I'm going to replace the drive member along with the shaft.
2) I heard that I can weld the shaft to the drive member so there is no play. Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Anyone else done this?

Check the A frame first, and the ujs on the rear prop. cheaper fixes!

As above, check the A-frame balljoint, had a similar noise on mine and that was the culprit, also check the mainshaft of the gearbox, could be the reason.

Yes a well known problem.
There's a post in the maintenance section on this problem.
The problem over here is generally caused by rust between the splines on the shaft and the splines in the flange.
The rust is caused by lack of lubrication. I have one side always dry because of the new type of oil seal near the hub in the axle. I'm removing those seals when I get the oportunity.

New drive flanges normally sort the job out. I'm told the aftermarket ones are better than genuine ones but I can't proove it :D

When you service the vehicle in future, remove the rubber dust cap, clean the mating faces then add some oil to the cap before re-fitting. That seems to hel on mine.

As Mike says, quite common. Spinning the shaft is the next step, when the teeth get too badly worn.

Welding is purely a "Get you out of trouble in an Emergency" repair, until you can get the parts.
