UK Northumberland Green Lane Routes

Does anyone know where I can find information on green lane routes in and around Northumberland? Not pay and play or experience days, which is what tinternet searches keep bringing up - looking for routes away from the tarmac.

im new to this off road stuff myself and was faced with the same issue.. how do I get to use my vehicle off road ..
you could join up with the green lane association , check out routes on an ordinance survey map, and check with local authorities, just to make sure there are no restrictions on the routes you spot on the maps and want to use..

my route,( if you will excuse the term:D ).. because basically I couldn't be bothered making that effort was to contact a company that run trips mainly in northern England , but I have been to Wales with them..
my thinking was id be unlikely to be venturing out on my own anyway, as things can and do go wrong , and I was keen to make sure I was using the lanes legally, so I choose to pay someone for peace of mind on the above mentioned points..
the longer you are at it the more likely you are to develop friendships which might lead to days out on lanes without paying for the privilege, but still staying safe and legal..

There’s quite a lot of green lanes over this way inland from Amble, I believe they used to have local car rallies around them, but a lot are in a sorry state and have not been used by motor vehicles for some time. I have ridden around some on an Enduro bike, going very easy and being cautious and considerate to walkers, but still got filthy looks from anyone I encountered. I can appreciate that you go out into the countryside for peace and tranquility, so it’s a tricky one really. I think there is an off-road route up at Kielder that can be used sometimes as well.

I've read about the Kielder route. The website is well out of date - giving 2020 event dates. I assume it is still available. although it sounds like it might not be much more than an unmade up stone track through the woods. There is another site which states it is a one way toll road. I watched a UTube vid of a euro bike trail from Amble across to Rothbury - rocks across the track in one place to prevent 4x4 use. Northumberland is the most sparsely populated County in England - it's all countryside. I'll have a look at The Green Lane Association suggested by Andy63 to see what info they might have.

Actually I just remembered a mate told me he regularly sees a group of Series land rovers green laning around the Mitford/Morpeth area so there’s probably a club down there somewhere, unless they are just a bunch of mates. Never see much Northumberland action on the forum, but isn’t someone on here from Otterburn?

I feel a bit like Groucho Marx in that I wouldn’t want to be part of any club that would be willing to let me be a member, but really for green laning, I guess you ideally want at least two vehicles.. :)

I've been scouring the Council map. Hardly any BOAT byways and half of them end in dead ends, footpaths or ordinary byways which can't be driven. Difficult to make any sensible route. 5 mins here and there on an old broken tarmac or un-made-up road with A and B roads between. Plus there don't seem to be any 4x4 or Landy clubs in Northumberland linked to the Green Lane Association. I seem to be in a bit of a desert as far as recreational off-roading goes - which is ironic given the number of 4x4's in this part of the country.
I'm guessing the Mitford/Morpeth lot are either farmers or have permission from farmers to play on their land - there isn't much in the way of BOATS in that area.
Perhaps I'll invite members up to our place for a weekend camping and playing on our old tank course. A couple of volunteer rescue 4x4 groups use it for training. We've got a cafe, wood pizza oven van, burger tent, a drinks (soft, alcoholic, artisan coffee) truck and loos (no showers). We already host regular machinery meets and have a big 40's military weekend organised for this year. A few years ago we held a similar event with over 13,000 visitors. I don't see why we couldn't organise a Landy weekend if enough people were interested.
Anyway - we're off to Scotland in a couple of months - I'll pick the windiest hilliest route I can find. Won't be going straight up the A1 that's for sure.

Wow your place sounds amazing!

The other problem around here, is people hunt the deer and they tear around all over the countryside/fields in 4wd’s after them, so the farmers try to block access as much as possible..

Mitford is a very affluent area, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a bit of land themselves or are well connected.

Aye, Mitford is just down the road from me. Similar to Tranwell Woods in terms of house prices. Lots of rough shooting around here.
Our biz isn't off-roading. We had a big pile of soil after excavations for a new building and had fun driving over it. We had the idea of diversifying and built an off-road course for tanks and DAF 4x4 trucks. The maintenance on the tanks - urgh - very specialist and we just didn't have the time, facilities or the right kit to devote to it. Plus too much of a distraction from our main activities. Still got the mud and the water holes though :D The other things I mentioned are just part of what we do.
