Oil filter 4, evrything else 0

stevo

Trekker
So the oil filter is winning.....

Strap wrench slips

chain wrench slips

chain wrench with sandpaper slips

New filter wrench (wind on with dimples in) doesn't move

New filter wrench (wind on with dimples in) doesn't move with extension bar on either

Great big metal bar hammered in doesn't move it either

Any more ideas?

Get a chisel and tap the edge anti clockwise, where the filter is rolled over, near the block. It should undo after a few clouts.

Ah, the last resort!

I didn't have to do it though, wd40 on the top and a lot of clouting persuaded it :)

I have some lovely bruises on my hand though, where I missed!

Cheers as usual for all the advice, much appreciated!

too many things in the way to give it a proper clout!

I was starting to doubt my sanity after a while. The damn thing wouldn't move even a tiny bit!

At least all the oil had drained out overnight thanks to the great big hole I put in it yesterday :)

Last question...

The thread that the filter screws on to - should this have rotational play in it?
There was a bit......

Most oil filter threads are either screwed in or part of the filter housing.

Without looking at the Maual, I can't say for sure.

If it has a hexagon on it, it screws in.

If CCK, Sandy or Snagger can't asnwer it, I'll dig the sheets out.

I had a Jag V6 on Friday that was solid, but it moved for me...;)

Just having a quick look at the 2.5 NA and the 300, they appear to have a screw in thread that has 2 cut outs which tighten them up. Take it out and check the threads. Then nip it up tight.

Chris

This is a 200tdi, and I'm refering to the 'bolt' (for want of a better word) that the filter screws onto.

I couldn't make it work loose, and to be honest, I had lost the will to live after several hours getting the filter off :)

As long as the filter is tight, leave it.

You could take the housing off and have a look at it when you have more time.
