OK, so I think I've found the noise. How do I replace a Universal Joint.

Wild Rover

Overdrive!
Hi there, I have been trying to find a tinkleing noise for some time and thanks to Bernie Hayden I now have a supect. The rear dif universal joint. Has anybody replaced a spider in this position as I am not sure of how to remove / replace the 'x' . I can not see how to push the spider out of the arms of the UJ as the spider is a single component.

Cheers

Hi Rover, I emailed you some info earlier, did you not get it?

Yes thanks Bernie I received the exploded plan, did not get the other but I just don't see how to remove the spider, or replace it for that matter. As a solid unit it looks like it would not come out of the c shaped arms.

Cheers

Put a socket in where the bearing cup is and squeeze with a bench vice it'll push the bearing cup out the other side.

There are circlips holding each bearing cup in but they will be jammed in place. You need to puch them in a fer thou to make it possible to remove them first of all. Put a small socket inside the diameter of the circlip and use a vice or g-clamp to puck it in a tad. Protect the other side of the JU with a bit of wood to avoid burring it over.
With all clips removed use a bit bigger socket as a drift to push one cup inwards thereby pushing the other side out. Then reverse the action etc.
A vice is better for putting them back in to keep it all in line. Use lots of grease on reassembly to keep the little rollers in their proper place.

OK, so nothing to do with mmgemini or me then.

Chock the wheels, release the hand brake and remove the propshaft (bolts and nuts are 9/16"). Remove the circlips from the spiders and use a vice and wrench socket to drive the UJ to one side then the other, forcing out one bearing cup at a time.

When you fit the new cups, fit the first so that most of it still protrudes, then drop the spider into it before fitting the opposite cup. Then press both cups in until you can fit the circlips. Once they're all done, loosen the over-compression by layng the prop on the bench with any of the bearing cups pointing upwards. Give the youlk either side a vertical tap down with a hammer to force the spider to rpess the bottom most bearing cup down against its circlip, then repeat on the other three.

Nope. Actually I saw that Bernie had sent an E mail to him.
Then I just couldn't get my head round a how to do it.Anyway your explanation is that good I don't need add to it.
Last one I did was in Botswana. Luckily there was a vice where I was staying.

Thanks all, very comprehensive explanation. Cheers. Now I just need to wait for it to stop snowing. Botswana sounds good at the moment.

Sorry guys no disrespect intended, just found the culprit with a screwdriver before I had to try any other methods. Thanks for the advice on fault finding and repair. I found it very useful and will follow your advice while replacing the part. Cheers
