overdrive switch

ozzies

In Second Gear
I am planning to fit an overdrive to my 90 XS and I wish to keep the original leather gearknob so any ideas please on where to fit switch (what kind?) and indicator light.

I was thinking on the small panel below the radio a toggle switch so you could flick it with your finger in 3 rd gear postion. sugguestions please.

What I did was, leave the gearnob in place, attatched it lower down the gear stick (rather crude) Simple enough to activate and deactivate.

However, I bought some switched for around £3 which I need to wire up somewhere on the dash Im going to make. If you have a modern dash (mines an early 2001 so no fancy dash) simply add a switch on there like you said.

My switch has 3 prongs on it, same as the OD gear nob top wires.

A positive, negative and a wire for the light. (Im a bit of an electrical noob)

The whole switch lights up on mine.

Havent done it yet but write down what the wires do from the instruction manual and ask a local electircal shop or search the net.

I use mine equally in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear so I'd just leave it on the O/D knob. Cover the O/D knob in leather to satisfy your fetish. ;)

I'm with AJC on this. Moving the switch anywhere else takes away the ease of use, I usually drop out of OD when changing down for roundabouts etc flicking the switch as I shift.

The instructions state that the wiring should not be shortened or modified, although I can't see what difference this would make.
