Printing digital photos

Bernie

Posting Guru
I've got a b/w laser which is fine for most of my printing, and a Canon BJC 3000 inkjet for when I occasionally need colour.

The Canon is fine for odd bits, but I'm fed up with printing out rubbish quality photos (ie with normal cartridges on normal A4 paper), so I dug out some photo paper and cartridges I got ages ago, and gave it a try. Still rubbish :D SO, some questions:

1. Do I not need a yellow photo cartridge? I have C M K but no Y, and they don't seem to be available, so I have just used my standard (non-photo) Y cartridge. Or is that why I have a yellow film across the whole photo?

2. ANything I can do to the Canon to make it print photos better? I've got all the right settings, but could it need a new print head or is there a special print head for photos?

3. Do I just need to bite the bullet and buy a photo printer? If so can I get one cheap or is it the usual 'get what you pay for'? Any recommendations?

I got a Kodak photo printer off ebay for about £30, brand new. It only prints 6x4's but the quality is fantastic, you can't tell the prints from proper photo's. The trouble is the paper and ribbon works out quite expensive so we only print a few and when we want a quantity doing we take a disc to Tesco's and they do digital printing for silly cheap prices.

The BJ300 isn't the best for photo printing. They also have a counter (i believe 3 years) and then you need to take it to a dealer to have the waste ink thingy emptied. Printer will stop working. I have one on a shelf in work as its died a death!

For good results I would get a new printer, not so expensive these days!

The counter is usually based on the number of copies you make (definitely so on Epson)

The waste pad is there to catch 'drips', but the ink dries when it drips... so not sure how that works

Anyhoo, a friend ;) told me that there is software available on the internet for free, that resets the counter, enabling use of the printer again, allegedly...

Back on thread, I use Photobox.co.uk to store pics and print. free to join, lots of options, (evan a cushion...) and if anyone buys pics, you get credits to spend :)

We've got a hewlett packard photosmart, bought (grudgingly on my part) nearly a year ago, for not much more than €100, ie well under £100. Cartridges are dear, around €30, There are three types, black, colour, and photo, of which you only use two at once but I never remember to use the right ones. In 12 months I've bought two extra cartridges, but prob need to buy another new colour one after messing around - alot - with personalised Christmas and birthday cards last month. I tend to use it mostly for sending photos/images to other people who either don't have computers, or who aren't photo orientated.

It does produce good quality photos, and I tend to buy the HP paper to go with it. There is everyday quality paper and premium plus. They all have a good finish but the premium stuff is more permanent and takes longer to dry. There is 6x4 up to A4. The only down side is software compatibility. I can print photos from three software programmes on the computer, one of which is the HP one, and needless to state this one actually prints more accurately ie borderless pix are actually that. I also can print straight from camera to printer (and mobile phone to printer via bluetooth), so don't need to connect computer if I don't want to fiddle with pix. There are some minor adjustments that can be made on printer (eg remove red eye) if wanted.

Like an idiot I bought a total photo version when I planned to buy photoprinter/scanner/copier. So I really need to buy an extra one. AND I must buy a new b/w laserjet after the 11-year old HP died on me last year. What is yours Bernie - and is it any good? The photosmart printer seems less good quality plastic (???) as the old laserjet, but can't complain about the images. Kate

Thanks folks, lots of useful suggestions there :)

I've often thought of taking a disc into town for printing but it takes a lot of organising for someone as shambolic as me :D The vast majority of pics I send by email, but there are just a few peeps who don't use a PC and I need to be able to print out the odd pic on the pur of the moment for them.

My Cannon is a BJC3000, not 300. Never heard of that counter thing before, I've had it for years and it hasn't packed up yet! Maybe it is just about to

Kate, I have to say I've been very lucky (so far!) with my b/w laser. It's a Samsung ML-5100A, and I have had it for absolutely donkey's years. It just keeps on going, bit like an old Landy, and it gets some real punishment with my work, sometimes printing out hundreds of pages at a time. It's not super duper fast, but fast enough. It does jam up quite easily, but I think this is largely because my office gets quite cold at night, the paper gets a tad damp and then sticks together going through. I dread the thought of it packing up, cos it is just so much more solid than all the tat you see on the market these days.

Toner cartridges are pricey but they seem to last an eternity, I get through one every 1-2 years.

Blimey. Thanks for the link Satancom :) I'm sure I've had mine a lot longer than 3 years, will have to try and work out when I got it now :D

Hey BigJim, thanks for that :)

I've got a houseful of old printers they are more than welcome to :D

"Oh Shucks, I thought I could get rid of one"
I will have to take it to the dump before they start charging to dump it.

It is actually a Minolta QMS magicolor 2300W, prints fine for about 60 pages, then toner gets everywhere inside, so get smudgy patterns on the page.
have cleaned it all out, checked everything, but hasn't sorted it.

Never liked canon printers, i prefer HP you can usually get cheaper remanufactured cartridges from ebay as well to keep the costs down.

Try www.inkandstuff.co.uk for your cartridges. It costs about £12 delivered for a set of 4 different colours for my Epson RX420. They have got a deal on at the moment - Mix and match 10 cartridges for £25 delivered.

Delivery is usually within 3 days, usually less

No, I've emptied that, I suspect whatever it is that moves the waste toner into the WT container is not functioning. Any ideas how that is done?

I have a QMS 2200 sitting behind my office door. Ill take a nose in the morning and see if there is anything obvious

I had a look, and there is nothing obvious that could be wrong. As long as the catridges are originals and not copies then i think its scrap time.. QMS Enginees are expensive!

Sorry bud

Thanks.
the cartridges are originals but have been refilled by the previous 'owner' from whom I got it for nowt...(they got a new one -canon I think- as had urgent jobs to do)
I have looked to see what he might have done to the cartridges, he says he just took out the plugs and refilled, I thought he might have overfilled but he didn't.
So no loss of tha hard earned stuff, except it would have been nice if I could have had it to use.
