hi, i have just purchaced a freelander s reg xedi, s wagon, and it has started to make a noise from the front drive, it sounded like drive shafts to me but on reading up via the net i have learned it could be the transfer box, however on inspection i have noticed there is no propshaft fitted at all, nothing, ive had it 6 months and not noticed, i would like to put this right but i need help, i dont know wats missing, im reading about bearings, vicious couplings and front/rear shafts, also can i get the parts to re-con my transfer box? and do it myself, i plan to go round europe soon and need it right, need help please and an addy of transfer box parts if poss, thanks:(

The missing propshafts, with Freelanders, is becoming a problem. It is happening too often.

The IRD ( Intermediate Reduction Drive) is the transfer box. It cannot be repaired as there are no parts available to repair it. The VC ( Viscous Coupling) in the propshafts is the usual culprit for the IRD and Rear Diff failing.

To get it back to Standard, you will spend about £1100 on parts, if they are all required.

You need the props and VC, check the IRD oil for colour and swarf, check the rear diff by removing the back plate and have a look.

If you need everything, get the parts from a Vehicle Breakers.

Did you buy the vehicle privately or from a garage? If from a garage, you should be able to get them to replace the parts as they have sold a vehicle that is not what it is advertised as. There may be some recompense from a private sale but this would probably be costly in the short term.

A Private Sale would be near impossible to get anything back. If he isn't a Mechanic, you need to prove he knew that the vehicle wasn't complete.

If it was Bought from a Trader, as a 4x4, it is up to him to make sure it is fit for it's purpose.
If he sold it as a 2wd, ( as we have done to a couple of older Freelanders with VC trouble, cheap and as seen, "No Warranty Implied or Expressed") then he is within his Rights.

hi thanks to all, it is not possible to get any compo as i bought the freelander "sold as seen" so its to fix, do you recomend someone who would have all the parts and be able to re-con my IRD unit? if i deal with one person i might get a better deal, thinking of new or re-con only rather than breakers yard, might be buying the same problem from breaker, the vc is the only real expence (well for such a small part) but going traveling soon so need it right, thank's

If a dealer has written sold as seen on any part of paperwork without a specific list of known faults right down to last detail to go with it then courts will look at this with a very dim veiw and will in most cases find the blame lies with the trader....Even if car is sold as a "private sale" and the seller can be proved to be selling 5 or more cars per year then it is looked upon as a commercial enterprise and you have the same rights as if you bought it from a "legitimate" trader. If it has been bought from a genuine private seller then you really do need to have proof that it was known to them before sale....normally held on dealers computers local to where you purchased it....(ask the right people the right questions and you can often come up with more info than you need to have problems rectified.)

No warranty is needed to chase this up (most arnt worth the paper they are written on) as you are protected under your statutory rights.

If you have used any form of finance to purchase vehicle then then most reasonable finance companies will take on the fight for you even if they do need a bit of a push.

Hope you get it sorted.

the vc is the only real expence

About £1400 plus propshafts and VC bearings. plus labour.

Around £2000 all in. That's why I suggest a breakers for parts off a late accident damaged vehicle.

That is why we sell some old Freelanders as 2wd and tell the buyer as such, it isn't worth it for us to repair and sell them. But they can do the work themselves. We take props and VCs off for use in newer vehicles, the old ones are used for spares, then sold as seen for Salvage, so there is no Warranty or comeback.

u can get a bran new vc off ebay for £350 a new ird is £750 but i have herd sum lads getting them for £300 & £250 for prop all on ebay

hi graham i know how you feel, i first joined this very good forum after the same probs as you. i bought a 99v reg diesel in november and after changeing the front pads discovered that i two had no prop, completely missing from transfer box to rear diff.took it back and told that some one must have stolen it?(its not possable to do) i then found a specialist breaker for freelanders who had a freelander comeing in with a knacked engine so i came back later in the week and took it of and fitted it straight away so all the bit i needed were on the other one and did all this for £360 parts and labour all worked fine. as for the dealer told by him no way was he going to pay! went to tradeing standards told me wot to say in a letter sent this and waited te two weeks they said for him to reply,no reply. they sent him one then and no reply. told the could do no more and i will have to go to small claims on my own so in the process of that now? its not as easy as people think so best of luck and it will be a long deal

It is a shame that it is so difficult for a consumer to get satisfaction from what are no more than rogue traders. The whole system seems to make it economically unviable to persue justice and recompense. So many people have to just chalk it up to experience to spare themselves the cost and stress involved with going through the courts :( .
