Bob,
in this months LRM mag there is an article on landrovers in Afghanistan. i noticed a smaller pic of a WMIK belonging to 42 Cdo RM in Helmland province. it was a little unusual to normal in that it had noticably different wheels and what looked like underbody protection going from sills to chasis. could you shed any light on the matter?
thanks.

Well spotted, I missed the differences. Ricardo have been doing developments on the WMIK, could it be one of those on trial? Sure I've seen something like it in MMI, can't search for it at the moment.

Found it, Jan 2007 MMI article on WMIKs has wrongly captioned photo of an identical WMIK at DVD2006 but correctly in the text as an uprated WMIK with the statement "at the time of writing a decision as to whether this particular varient will be built had yet to be made" Hmmm

I'm not that Bob but hey.....
The WMIK upgrade includes alloy wheels and additional bits and pieces bolted to the chassis and some other very novel alterations (I learnt the other day why they now use alloys in prefence to steel rims and believe me it's not just for good looks!)
Suffice to say disclosing exact details of the improvements and what's been achieved in an open forum would be irresponsible.

i would be interested to learn more on the alloy's. i daresay that even the taliban could figure out that those underbody plates have nodoubt got something to do with increased protection from IED's and mines.

Bob's off forum for a while (till April I think)

First I knew of it.:wink2:

As has been mentioned elsewhere on the Military section, photographs released by the MoD of Enhanced WMIK should be in the next issue of LRM (the May cover date - April issue has been distributed already to suit Tesco's timescale) but do not expect too much detail. Just as some things cannot be mentioned in open forum, likewise they cannot be printed in a Land Rover Magazine ... just in case the Taliban go gleaning through discarded toilet paper for intelligence.

Those of you who have been reading my scribblings on military Land Rovers over the last twenty years will be well aware that I do not pass detailed comment on protection level specifications and/or upgrades, even though sometimes the MoD and manufacturer may have already put such information in the public domain, as the maxim 'careless talk costs lives' is every bit as relevant today as it was in WWII. My piece on E-WMIK will be no different.

Bob

hey guys, don't go jumping threads so you can carry on the fight!

thanks for the replies regarding the WMIK cannonball. i fully understand the things you can and can't tell people. i was there once myself a few years ago, only then it was mostly jack who taxied us around. keep up the good work and stay safe.
bob,i don't doubt your knowledge regarding the green oval but i always find you get more respect it you can keep your mouth closed and your ears open. the school playground 'i know something you don't know, ha ha' doesn't prove knowledge, only arrogance. it's very unlikely that as a civvie you'd be given information that should be kept out of the public domain,if you're being told not to pass anything on it's most likely you're being humoured. however it's been a while, things have moved on and i may be wrong. no doubt if i am you'll be quick to point it out! people in the forces take stick all day long, and can take it if the person giving is also in the forces. you're not in the loop, keep it professional. i look forward to next months LRM. keep up the good work.
