RAM usage

kens

Shifting Up
usall problem brought the boys new pc games at xmas, one of which is pretty slow with playing issues. PC spec should be ok, although graphics card is on the limit. However when i check the system memory 512mb it only has approx 111mb spare.
question - before i buy a graphics card / more memory is there a way i can check where the ram is used and then free up if possible. I'd like to be sure i spend the cash in the right direction.

Many thanks

111Mb left over is a bit low - 111Mb is more typically used on a Windows XP system just humming along doing ... NOTHING

You should be able to see in Task manager where its all going

512Mb is usually enough though you can never have too much RAM

Whats the graphics card?

graphics is only a nvidia fx5200 128mb, really need to upgrade but was hoping that by freeing up memory it may buy me more time and cash.

thanks

Go into task manager, click on the processes tag, sort the mem mem usage column high to low and It should show you where all your ram has gone.

I have used a free program called CCleaner with good results for getting rid of cr@p.

what games are they? i have a 128mb fx5600 in one of my older systems and it really struggles on newer games and that system has 2 gig of ram,

i run a 256mb overclocked ati x1600 in my games box atm and that has 4 gig of ram.

Hi using IE7?

Have been reports of explorer file increasing in size when you open a new window, then when you close the window, staying th enew size. if you then open a new window increasing in size again, etc, etc.

I have 1Gb/1024Mb of RAM, on one ocassion got me down to 131Mb free RAM.

Uninstalled IE7 back to IE6 no more problems

What is the full spec of the system?

I think the graphics and the RAM are an issue here, you can never have to much RAM. from what i remember the FX series where a cut down version of the full Nvidia graphics chipsets.
