Range Rover TDV8 - Brake failure but not warning message or light

Hi All
Wondering if someone can advise me in my hour of need. Last August I bought a 58 plate Range Vogue from a main LandRover Dealer with a full Landrover warranty - I was driving from Cambridge upto Angelsey last weekend, when I pulled into a petrol station I heard my brakes scaping dreadfully. (When I left Cambridge they were fine) At 9:30 on saturday morning I rang Landrover assistance explaining the problem and they came out to see the car. They said the pads/disks had worn evenly but the pads were now down to the metal and have ruined the disks and the car in now unsafe to drive. They trailered it back to the main dealer in Derby. He said that this would be covered by the warranty as the sensor had failed to alert me to the problem. He confirmed this in his report.

Hunters Derby have now said it's ware and tear & the warning light is only advisory and not to be relied upon..... What do I need to do - Pre drive checks on the car??? If the warning light had come on I would have had the pads changed immediately and therefore the disks would now be fine.... Any advice, help, guidance? Please

Rich

The problem you have is there is only 1 sensor on each axle whereas there is 4 brake pads and it only takes 1 pad without the sensor to wear out first and the light wont come on. The sensor normally hits the disc when the pad its fitted to has about 2-3mm of friction material left which isnt much at all. If one pad is just a little bit stiff in the caliper it will wear slightly faster than the others, i hope this makes sense to you. As for the the warrenty its very rare to get brakes covered unless theres a major defect yours are just worn out. As for checks brake pads on a heavy car such as yours will probably do around 25-30k dependant upon your driving but should be checked at least once a year. hope this helps.

this is the problem with modern cars especially when on longlife service schedules. the oil might go 10k or 20k without being changed but the brakes might not. did they give you a service report when you bought it with the measurements of the pads on ?
sometimes one pad will just wear out quicker than the others, but an inspection would need to be made to see. if one pad is down to metal and the others are at 6mm then something is wrong. if the others are at 1 or 2 mm, then no problem.
i think in your case you will just have to take it on the chin, put it down to experience and get a service or checkover every 6 months. its only a quick job to lift it on a ramp and check brakes, tyres and fluids.
