Rebuild tools.

In Fourth Gear
My R380 gear box in my 300TDI Defender has (i think) broke. it may also be the transfer box. I put a topic on here a few weeks ago - however, i took the box out last weekend and i was thinking of getting a DIY kit and doing a rebuild myself. I have a LR workshop manual, and it says that i need LR special tools to do the job.

1/ Are they easy to get hold of ?

2/ How much ?

3/Do any of you out there have any for sale ?

I sent off to an address in the manual to see if i can some details as well.
Cheers for looking.

I have just found a website which lists tools and prices - to buy the tools to do the job would cost me the same as it would to buy a recon! Ashcroft Tranmissions look good - any thoughts?

Buy a box from Ashcrofts - most independants use them, all the ones I work for wouldnt use anyone else.Excellent company, excellent products and service.

The later gearboxes are not that easy a DIY prosepect, even with the right tools. Save yourself the money and get it done by Ashcrofts - that way it only needs doing once, will be an instant service-exchange item so the vehicle will be driveable again quicker, and you won't have a pile of one-use-only special tools laying about afterwards.

Yes, Ashcrofts. We use them as well, we can't rebuild them to their standards or as cheaply.
One out, one in, job done, Home for tea.:)

I've just rebuilt my LT230, and its a relatively easy job (bearing & seal kit from ashcrofts). I didnt need any of the LR tools (but hydraulic press & dial gauge probably are needed).
R380 would be a different matter, get a recon.

what actually is the problem, do you know if it is R380 or Lt230 that has failed?

No reverse, no forward gears - put diff lock on - i then have forward gears, but not reverse.

Checked for broken half shaft - all ok

took gearbox out, and the splines that go into the Transfer box are well worn.

The transfer box feels notchy when you turn the output flange.

Spoke to a number or gearbox specialists in the mags and they say it could be one or both. Don't want to go through the hassel of taking it out again.

It must be a transfer box problem. If you have drive with diff lock on, then drive is getting past the main box.
I guess the centre diff could be popped.
strange you have no reverse though, even with diff locked.

the main box output shaft is often well worn. it suffered from lack of oiling on early units. ashcrofts do a nice cross drilled input gear, but if the output shaft is too bad, u may need a recon main box anyway.

The 1st gear syncro on my LT77 has gone was thinking of rebuilding it myself, but even with access to special tools from work i still think it will be better to get it from Ashcrofts, can get one through work. We use them for a lot of cars out of warrenty because we can get them cheaper then LR. And of course you get a warrenty with them.

Phoned up Ashcrofts today and put an order in for a R3880 & lt230t - Should be ready for Thursday next week as they don't have any ready.
It will be good to have my Landy back - it's been on axle stands since November! Too busy working weekends.
