Recovery Eyes - Series 3?

stoner

In Fourth Gear
I'm going to an off-roading event in a couple of weeks, first time doing the 'heavy stuff' so I need to fit recovery points and make sure I have a tow rope. Also looking at a shackle to fit over my tow ball.

Can anyone tell me what I need as a minimum, where to get it from, and how to fit it? I've seen the 'D ring' recovery points, which I guess can bolt to my standard bumper. Can I use eye bolts as an alternative?

I don't want to go mad on price as I'm still suffering from post-Christmas disease!

Thanks

No - that's just the pin that keeps the hitch's jaw lock shut. A decent second hand hitch wil cost about £40, and if you have a civilian rear crossmember, you'd need the adaptor plate and bolts (have a look at the one on my 109). I got that plate s/h from balnchards for £10, including the stainless bolts.

OK. I was under the impresson that it could fit round the base, underneath the ball itself, so it couldn't pull off.

Are there any other options for the rear? I've got a pair of D rings for the front :)

if using for recovery then get a minimum of 3.5t http://www.towsure.com/product.asp?p=1331 is better still looks crappy though

this is the one i would get if you really need a tow ball

if you can get away without a towball then
http://www.paddockspares.com/pp/SERIES/Towing/Towing_jaw_3.5_tonne.html is what i use on my s2a

i have seen 2 many bent and broken cheap towballs and jaws to trust anything but dixon bate kit.

A shackle on a tow ball for recovery is a big no no IMHO  the implications should it come off whilst underload is vast. and then there is the twisting action and the fact it is metal on metal.

AS above with Poodle. Get a BD recovery jaw if you just need a recovery point Else wise it is the combined ball and pin hitch from DB. and remeber to bolt it too the rear crossmember with HT bolts and a sultible backing plate to spread the load.

the front you say is sorted good. i use two D eye's and put a bridle between the two. elsewise it is the eye of the rope put under the winch fairlead and then over the bollard.

HTH

Rowan.
