Replacing auto box with manual box

Nathan Snir

In Fourth Gear
As my quest for a manual transmission (left hand steering) Discovery TD5 is so far to no avail and as automatic Discovery TD5 are available I have been suggested by a friend to consider the possibility of replacing the automatic gear box with manual one.

Is this feasible? Is it straight forward thing to do? Is it costly? Will it effect the reliability of the vehicle.

Regards,

Nathan

I think the easy answer is no.

Not only would you have to change the gearbox, but also the engine ECU, as they are linked to gearbox control. I'm sure this is not the full story.

Don't be put off by the auto box, they are a pleasure to drive. Great off-road and for towing. They use a bit more juice and are slower off the mark, but you don't buy a Disco for speed.
