Salisbury bearing removal

In Fourth Gear
while changing rear diff oil seal I checked bearing state, the needles are worn and the bearing face turned grey with wear, obviously the bearing needs replacing (probably explains the droning noise coming from the rear on the motorway ?)

Anyway my question is, how do I remove the bearing outer from the diff casing ?

Also how do I know how much to tighten the new bearing ?
 
Sorry I've just noticed the title.
So it's a Salisbury.
Not under any circumstances a DIY job.

I've done three Salisbury diffs. I will never do another one. I did two at Fords while on a transmission course. The other at work at the main dealer.

I suggest you contact one of the transmission people to see if they offer a Salisbury service.

The other option is. Do you know anybody in REME. If so they might help you out.

do a search on here there is a really good thread on changing the bearing with lots of advice and pics.
 
Sack it, its going back in for now because the rear bearing looks a bit wobbly aswell, so I dont think theres much point in renewing one and not the other, an axle/diff rebuild next winter me thinks !

I will just put up with the droning for now and turn the stereo up !
 
If the front bearing is worn, the rear will be worse, it takes the thrust. You would probably be right in overhauling the axle. Price up an exchange, it could be the cheaper option. Straight out and back in, in a day.

There's a lot in setting those pinion bearings up and I do mean a lot. As Chris has said and I have implied go for an exchange unit or second hand.
The Salisbury is a good axle. Not known as being bullit proof for fun. It's not often you hear of a problem with a Salisbury. Look for a second hand one.
Now's your oportunity to fit discs to the rear :eek:
 
Glenn, sounds like you just missed out. Disc rear axle came in on 93 110s built to the 94MY spec, like mine:D (was originally a K-reg before I exported it).

All the 300Tdi and Td5s should have them, along with the very last of the 200s.
 
I may be wrong but i was led to believe that the new disc braked 110's have the same axle as the 90?... if you think about it logically on the series they were always driving the back axle so it needed to be bomb proof, but on the AWD's the load is shared equally.......of course could have been fed a load of sh1te!!!!!!..........keith
 
Any body know who can supply speedy sleeves for the flange in the North west UK ?

hi glenn i'm on the case looking for speedi-sleeves for my salisbury will let you know when i've found a supplier. there's plenty on google and templ4r posted a link last week ( salisbury rear axle seals or something ) just not got round to phoning yet. like gemini says bit of a nightmare overhaulin a salisbury though they rarely need it. just changing the oil seal can really mess things up if you did not mark the pinnion nut (collapsable pinnion spacer) also you say the track is grey, well so long as it does not have little flecks of metal embedded in the track or chunks missing or signs of overheating it's probably ok. are you sure it's not just a wheel bearing? as far as wear on the flange goes just try putting the seal in not quite so far so it runs on a different part:) i've done it in the past and it worked for me.

Done my own enquiries re the speedi sleeve with Wyko, the size I need is not available in europe ! with delivery 3 -4 weeks from usa !!. The grooving is really quite bad on the flange so I have bought a new one and be done with it. I did mark the flange for reassembly. Thanks for all help.

I got mine [Chicago Rawhide brand] from BSL, formerly Bearing Services Limited.

Dunno where abouts in the North West they might be, but a quick seach or trawl through the 'phone book shoud turn up a branch near you.
 
Reassembled it all with a new flange and new genuine LR seal, tightened up to previous marks and the leak is cured. a bit more expensive than speedi sleeve but it is sorted now. No play in bearing but droning still apparent above 60 mph, could it be wheel bearings ? they have just passed MOT.
