How Do I? series 3 fuel guage

i put a new fuel guage in but it still wont work sender and guage both work but together dont any ideas:confused:

Try running a new bit of wire to the gauge from the sender to verify that the wiring is ok?

also there is usually a little voltage reducer on or near the back of the dash to supply the guages. check the supply with a test meter
the fuse box on a series somtimes plays up so check and clean all the fuse connections

also to test the guage dab the wire from the sender down to earth (chassis will do) the guage should shoot up to full dont hold this on for long or it may damage the guage.

also check that you have a voltage on the other side of the guage to where the sender wire goes

as a final check you could swap the connections from the temp guage just to see if everthing is working

hope this may help

Hi does dabbing the wire you take off the sender down to earth make the gauge move up or go hard down past empty?

If it goes up then you may a faulty sender or bad earth on the sender unit.

if it goes hard down past empty try swapping the two wires around on the back uo the gauge.

If you have a multimeter that reads resistance in ohms remove the sender and meter between the tag and earth ( metal ring on sender) then move the float up and down you should see the resistance alter accordingly.

if all is ok then before re fitting into tank try connecting the gauge to the sender and eathing the metal ring of the sender unit to a known good earth point and move the float this should move the gauge.

hope this helps
