Short term insurance for trip out of UK

joe019

Overdrive!
Hi,

I am buying a Discovery from the UK and driving it over to Malta myself and an additional driver. I need to buy a short term insurance specifically for this trip. Is there anyone in here who is in the insurance business or has the knowledge about which companies offer this service?

Kind Regards
Joseph

Isn't Malta in the EU now?

In the UK, all insurance policies must offer at least 3rd party cover in all EU states, so maybe the same applies for Maltese policies? That should see you right as long as you weren't planning to go home via Albania.

Speak to your own insurance company. They should cover you. Most UK policies should cover you into Northen Africa.

If you have no joy with your own company E mail me direct on [email protected]. The company I can give you will only cover your losses not third party and not for UK use !!!

hi joe

i presume you do know about the exobitant import charges your island charges to bring it in.
I wanted to do it myself and leave it on the island in the safe hands of a friendly forum member, and then use it when i come over .
It's just that had a spare rangie to use , the problem the cars worth 300 quid and the inport duty is on engine size and would have been about 6000ml. i.e 9000quid

p.s tell me if it's changed cause i have some e-mails from the malta transport authority if you want a copy

Try AJ Insurance Service, Fleet House, 148 Dock Road, Tilbury, Essex, RM18 7BS. Tel. 0870 759 3330 Fax 0870 759 3339

They are almost the ONLY people in the UK to offer an 'ex-pats' policy; fully comp insurance intended solely for people intending to take their cars abraod for a year for work or whatever; of course, it's intended to be on the basis that you intend to bring the car back to the UK after a year, but then, how would they know? Mine worked out about the same price as my UK policy that would only give me three weeks abroad fully comp.

Mind you, all UK insurance policies cover you for the legal minimum for a few weeks abroad at a time, and companies will happily extend the minimum cover to fully comp, usually for free, if you don't want a year's policy with AJ.

Hope that helps.

Hi Svenuk,

I am looking for a commercial model for that reason. Unfortunately it has not changed, and as you said it is not worth it to import a non commercial model.

This company will only insure vehicles WITHIN the eu.

NFU will insure you AFAIK in Morroco so may cover where you want to go :o

Remember also that you can only take a vehicle out of the UK on a Carnet de Passage for less than twelve months. Any longer and you will need to export it and re-import it.

The trip will be all made within the EU. I also intend to register the vehicle as soon as I enter Malta, however it is good to know that :)

Thank you for the help so far. I am getting in contact with the companies you listed here at the moment.
