Snow tyres?

Abu

Trekker
Does anyone know where my dad and i might find some second hand wheels and snow tyres for his car?

Its a Saab 93 1.9 turbo Diesel 2005 225/45 R 17

Apparantly he can't use chains! We want to be prepared so we can drive out to sweden sometime in the next month. We are a bit stumped on where to start looking?

Best regards
Adam

If you are after snow tyres have a look at the Nokian range, they are cheap and bloomin reliable.

Got the studded ones on our car in Finland and Virve's father has used the none studded ones for the past 5 years and they will be fine for anything the Swedish roads can throw at you.

Just had a thought, I know in Finland you can hire a full set of wheels/tyres you just turn up they swap them over and look after yours until you get back.

Where abouts is your first port of call in Sweden, you on a ferry or doing the bridge from Denmark?

Let me know and Virve can call the Swedish relatives and try to get some info for you.

Many thanks for the offer...ill let my dad know and find out which direction we are planning to drive. We're heading for Stockholm and will probably only have a couple of day's notice before we set off.

Not a problem, most of the places in Finland seem well stocked so can't see the Swedish being any different. A couple of days notice should be fine.

Virve has already dropped a line to the cousins.

Thats exactly what we will be doing apparently. Ferry into Esbjerg in Denmark then over the bridge. If possible and reletivly cheap it sounds a lot better then buying wheels and tyres for a trip lasting a couple of days:)

Why not just buy a set of winter tyres and leave them on? I run on winter tyres from October through to early May and to be honest can't tell any difference apart from slightly less steering feel. They don't wear any quicker than all-season tyres and to be honest if I could get hold of them in May I would run them all year round. Doing 50k a year plus means I need two sets of tyres a year.

They also mean you'll get into no difficulties when the snow arrives here. This year I tried Kumho Snow tyres and they seem to be pretty good, certainly as good as the Pirelli Snowsport's I put on last year.

A mate who lives nearby actually runs on studded tyres for the winter months (don't tell the council...) mind you he works part time at the ski centre so's got a bit of an excuse.

Just noticed how wide the tyres are. Your probably going to struggle to get a winter tyre in that size and if you do it'll still be next to useless in anything resembling deep snow. Might be worth getting a cheap set of steels and putting something narrower on, preferably less than 200 wide.

Regards

Jamie

Cheers. that would be an option but i think my dad just bought 4 new road tyres a few weeks ago. I think he would be very reluctant to fork out for a whole new set.

Its only for a few days. we will put on whatever fits and of course narrower :)
