Does anyone know if the SA gearboxes for the series 3 were different?

I canot find a number with a suffix on my gear box - see pics below. Where is it normally located?

Those are casting numbers, the centre is just the Leyland badge.

You need stamped on numbers.

Bernie Hayden, Sandy or Snagger probably can point you where to look.

Hi CraigB

Have you tried phoneing Rob Leimer landies in Honeydew. Rob / Warren might be able to answer that question for you. His number is (011)795 2507.

I dont think the numbers will have been in a different place...

I have attached a photo of a SIII gearbox (awaiting stripping down..ie, I dont have the funds for a set of new bearings at the moment!:( ) the arrowed bit is the box number. The red line is where I have also seen the number stamped. Sometimes too, you might get a factory reconned gearbox..that will have a brass plate on the bellhousing with the number stamped into it, and the date of reconn.

Hope that helps! Sorry the pic is a bit out of focus...my camera is not very well...something else awaiting replacement!

Thanks - I'll check there tonight.

I called Cross country in JHB and they confirmed that the location is the same as in the picture.

What i found was that if they were not stamped as the picture shows then they would be stamped on the next section of flange edge below the red line rather than where the red line is.

Ok, I certainly don't have a number in any of those positions.... what now?

How do I order parts?

I need:

Bearings
Synchro cones
Synchro unit (1st / 2nd)
Seals

Any ideas?

I am far from a major centre, so it would be difficult to show them the samples.

Sorry, only just come across this thread for some reason ...

The two numbers you have posted both look like LR part numbers, but I can't find either of them in any of my books ... :dunno:

FRC1807 - a lot of s3 gearbox parts are FRC, some of them followed by 18xx, but I can't find that particular number.

539788 - again looks like a LR part no. but isn't quite. eg 539787 is the transfer case for all
2A / 3 ...

So I guess they could be SA specials.

Can you give the year, chassis number, and any other numbers you have (PM if you prefer) and I'll try and do some more digging around.

Giving my chassis numbre won't help too much - I have a s3 built on a s2 chassis.

I thought of measuring a few parts that the manual says are specific to A,B,C or D and sending those through and then ask the parts guys to figure it out.

Yes, I have seen that too....

Phil, have you seen one with a brass plate on the bellhousing? Or was that just on the recon boxes put into the later IIa's? I had one with the recon plate there...in fact, if I dig deep enough there might be one in the shed...

I'm wondering if a factory recon was done on a SIII box, would they plate it in the same place? (means taking the gearbox tunnel off though I guess)

According to the parts supplier:

Count the teeth on the outer synchro ring between 1 and 2. If is has 31, then it is a suffix A - which mine is.

Hope that is right!

The brass plate on the bellhousing was not unique to 2a rebuilds, cos i had a LWB series 1 that had one, serial number was 70 something, so they had not done many when they did that one.
I'm not sure that i have ever come across a series 3 factory rebuild unit or not, but i did rebuild that many that i must have.
Suffix A is very easy to identify by the lack or external ribs on the main box casing right hand side, B, C & D all have these ribs. Later D have the bolts holding the reverse gate assembly on a horizontal plane the earlier boxes have them on a vertical plane.:)
