Spares I carried on overland trips

You need to remember when reading this list that I could be a couple of days away from a garage if anything went wrong.


Here is a list of spares I carried on my last two trips.

I have rear lockers fitted to my Defender at the rear copies of the series three 109 set-up.
These carry so many spares.
For this year I had two aluminium boxes made to sit on the inside of the rear body where there's a wasted space.These boxes took quite a few spares.
The clutch was carried in the locker under the drivers seat.

One of the reasons for so many spares was the distance we travelled.I serviced the car once!!!The other was I don't speak the language.

Also I carried a full set of tools.

I also carried masking tape and tank[gaffer] tape in the car.
Tank tape was used over the rear lock barrels all the time to stop dust entering.

Sits in the left side where the roof joins the body sides.
 
Just out of interest, how many of your spare parts did you use after what mileage/period of time into your exped?

When we had our jolly round France Spain Portugal, say around 3500 miles, we went merrily from Southampton through France to bottom end of Spain without a problem. :) Having said that, we hadn't got out of Yorkshire before the tail pipe fell off,:( and we got a new one (which I had thoughtfully packed in the trailer) fixed at Loughborough. Called the RAC out in Southampton for an electrical problem with the Kenlowe fan.

Next stop Costa del Sol. Malaga/Marbella area (2,000 + miles as we detoured through France) when the alternator bracket came off, and I fixed a spare I'd made up earlier in the UK out of angle iron. Had to do that again after a few hundred miles (dodgy fitter:rolleyes: ). Replaced two core plugs around this time, and also needed a new battery - despite buying a huge brand new one before we left. That new one only lasted 500 miles or so before it went on a deserted beach looking at a Roman ruin outside Tarifa (ruin to be recommended - but not a good spot to break down).

Last thing to be replaced was two front hub oil seals, about 100 miles or so later. (Probably approaching the 3,000 mile mark in all).

I also carried fan belts, brake shoes, plugs, oils, master and slave cylinders, wheel cylinders, spare electrical fuel pump, radiator hoses, masses of tools. Didn't bother with any big stuff, and a lot of other things had been recently replaced as part of the rebuild.

The biggest problem without a doubt were the duff batteries. A&K

Water pump and serpentine belt.
We were at Namashushi about halfway along the Capri Stsip when the water pump went at breakfast. Just under a days drive from Rundu where there's a Mercedes truck dealer. At least another day to get bits fron the Land Rover dealer in Windheok [sp].

It's a bity like the Hi-Lift. I hope never to use it!!!

We spent six days in the Central Kalihari Game Reserve. The CKGR is bigger then Wales. It's a wilderness. We met four cars in those six days.
Some things you can botch others you do need the bits.

We did about 7 > 8,000 miles in three months. We were about two months in when the water pump went.
 
For Morocco I took quite a bit but the key points were:
New Alternator,
Water pump
Top and bottom rad hoses,
Track rod ends x 2
UJs x 2
Extra spare wheel & tyre
Rubber do-nut thingy
Drive belt
Wheel bearings/seals x 4
plus assorted light bulbs, nuts'n'bolts, repair putty, tie-wraps, bodge tape etc.
And enough tools to restock Halfords.

In 3500 miles I replaced one UJ. :rolleyes:

I changed a u/j in Maun. That was about 5,000 miles into the trip.
I was given the opportunity to service the Defender at a friends.
I noticed slight play in one u/j. Now had I been at home I would have just greased it but because I was in Botswana I decided to put a new one in where thare was a workshop of sorts.

I also found a bent track rod. I'd gone through some soft sand a bit too quickly and bounced very hard. It waould be another five weeks before we found somewher to straighten the rod.

I suppose even with a decent service and replacing certain items just prior to an exped, you never know when something will break.

Out of our 4 Morocco trips, I've been fortunate not to have had any major mechanical problems and the only other problem one of our team experienced was a cracked fuel pump which had to be replaced. A split tyre and a cracked windscreen was the only problems I had.

It's an expensive business stocking up with parts for a 'one off' exped but one of the guys I was with had quite a selection from a local dealer on a sale or return deal. A few vehicles of the same type on the same exped allows for the sharing of the parts purchase and stowage.
