Speed Cameras

russ2903

Accelerating Away
Heard last night at work that the law on speed cameras has(is) being changed. As the law stands cameras are only supposed to be placed in areas that have high accident rates.
The new law will allow councils to put cameras anywhere they see fit.

Cameras make lots of money so we can expect to see them 100 yards apart on EVERY road in the future.

Are any figures available to show how many lives it is assumed have been saved by each camera already in position?

You could try this link to a news article which says exactly the opposite to what you've heard their is also a link on that page which takes you to the governments own report which says that speed camera hav virtually no effect on accident figures.

Most of us have known for a long time that Cameras had more to do with revenue raising that they did with speed reduction and their own report agrees.

I remember a few years ago that American traffic cops were getting cancer from their hand held radar guns,so I'd be very wary about having one of these Gatso contraptions installed near my house.

heard on the radio that the average camera generates approx.£25,000 per year and if they were loaded with film all the time, revenue would be ten time more:eek:

For those lucky enough to have Satellite Navigation download the latest Speed (Safety) camera database from GPs World. Info here and download page here. all makes catered for.
Do not use GPS' World's voice waning prompts they are a bit naff! If you want voice prompts as an audible warning for the cameras then download these from Ray site these prompts are tremendous particularly Liz's voice
I have been using the camera database and Ray's voice prompts for about two years and I have to say they are a great advantage when driving on unfamiliar roads

For those wanting information as to the placement of speed cameras and their exact locations then visit The National Speed Camera Database

speed cameras and their supporters are satans spawn.

Come the revolution, they'll be first against the wall.

Saved my license several times over in the last 12 months, best £60 I've ever spent!

I'm waiting for the new directive. They're going to position a government official outside every toilet door to make sure our @rses are wiped properly.

The Nanny state is taking over.......

I love speed cameras, or should say, i would like to see more of them. if they were positioned every mile or two then maybe people would slow down more.
i see it every morning coming into the office. up until last year people blasted along this particular road, and there were accidents weekly, and over the last few years a few deaths. due to the deaths and people complaining, they put up the cameras. and what a difference it makes. granted they speed up after passing, but at the junction of the garage where it is, was murder at times, trying to enter, yet now its no problem at all.
And yes I'm one of these boring people who never, or never knowingly breaks the speed limits, and I'm very happy driving at the speeds on offer.

I'll clarify my position... Speed cameras in built up areas are fine (in fact i agree with them), as long as they are not hidden or put right where a 40mph zone becomes 30mph.. then thats fine.

Motorways is a differnt story.. and when cameras are hidden, thats not a deterant, thats revenue generating.

I know if your going from a 40 to a 30 you should be doing 30mph as you get into the zone, but a few hundred yards to slowup by coming off the gas should be alowed! Hell, just move the 30mph sign a few yards backwards!

But then the 30 sign would have to keep moving backwards until there was no 30 zone at all . ;)

I think he meant some sort of warning that a 30mph zone was directly ahead.

I know someone who got 3points plus fine for doing 34mph 46yards into a 30mph and he'd just come from 60mph to 3ompg. He tried to argue that the camera was too close to get a proper reading but they weren't interested

many thanks for your apraisal of me. I never realised i was satans spawn till you pointed it out. I wont tell you my opinion of people who moan about speed cameras.

Actually, joking aside, I very rarely stray above 30 in a 30, and if I do, it's accidental and I correct immediately.

However, I will at times drive at between 5 and 15 miles above the limit in 50, 60 and 70 zones if the conditions and vehicle (obviously not my landy) are suitable.

I don't consider driving at 85mph on an empty motorway dangerous, irresponsible or worthy of prosecution by speed camera. Had this argument several times on here already though so don't think we're going to find any common ground.
