Starting with charger attached

I've got a CTEK battery conditioner currently topping up my Defender whilst I battle with starting problems. Is it ever safe to try starting the car with the charger installed, or should I disconnect it? Is just switching it to standby sufficient?

I've only got a cheapo battery charger and I have never worried about disconnecting it when starting and although the meter goes a bit mad I ain't blown it up yet, although it probably isn't very good practice:o

cheers, Tim

As said, remove one of the leads, as when you start the vehicle, you are drawing a high ampage, and as such may damage the charger, or not get enough to actually start the vehicle....
