T-gearbox Or Automatic Gearbox

SAILOR7

In Second Gear
DEAR::(
My 98' d1 v8 got trouble. start engine is fine but can not move fwd gear in D/3/2/1, or move fwd slowly(have noisy sound from under of vechle) and then stop suddenly (seem 4 wheels locked),"R' gear is good.
TRANSFER GEAR in "L" also same condition.
Dealer engineer took off T-gearbox cover found only few lubricant oil remain and have some iron filings inside. he said "T-gearbox is dead ,need to renew one" But I read technologic book, it's seem to be automatic gearbox trouble.
Is it trouble on "automatic gear box"or"transfer gear box"?

It is difficult to diagnose a problem when you can't actuallty see the vehicle and parts.

Going by what you say, if it drives slowly and locks up, that is usually an indication of gear teeth not meshing (Broken teeth) or a bearing locking up.

As Reverse is the lowest gear, things often work in that gear simply due to the engine forcing the parts to move or the things after the gear moving a lot slower, giving the problem area time to move.

Being an Automatic, if something is locking, the Torque Convertor will slip. If it were a manual, the engine would stall.

If it were the gearbox, you probably wouldn't get any drive out of it, so reverse wouldn't work either. The forward gears use clutches and brake bands, so if one of those failed, you tend to lose 1 or 2 gears.

If the Transfer gears look OK, the weak point is the 3rd diff gear cluster. But that is usually made apparent when youi try to turn a corner.

All I can suggest is you jack the vehicle up and turn the wheels by hand and listen for noises in the transfer box. If the cover is off, you can at least see if anything is wrong in there.

There is a way to check the gearbox output, but I am not going to advise you do it, as it could be seen as a dangerous thing for an unskilled person to do and I wouldn't want it on my conscience that I could have caused you to be injured.

I would have a talk with your Dealer and express your concerns about the gearbox. If they insist it's the transfer box, let them get on with it, but insist you don't want a call saying it hasn't cured the problem.
