TD5 not starting (sometimes). Fuel?

Accelerating Away
I need some help with an intermittent starting problem on a 2002 130 TD5 Defender. 135,000Km on the clock. It has happened only a few times in the last 6 months, and I reckon it's a fuel related issue.

If parked with the nose uphill and not driven for a week or so (this is the only common thing in the 3 times it's happened, but might not be relevant) she won't go. Fuel in tank is around 1/4 full. The slope on the driveway is not extreme, but def a slope.

If I do the whole "ignition on, pump the accel 5 times and wait for 30 secs" routine she eventually starts after a lot of cranking, and the problem disappears for maybe weeks and weeks. The fuel pump makes a slight wailing sound when it is going through the purge routine, but it doesn't sound worryingly abnormal or anything.

So - I am wondering, can air get into the system somewhere through a dry O-ring or something? It has a LongRanger 120L replacement fuel tank if that is relevant.

What do you guys think?
Thanks
David

Is the fuel pump definately running when this problem occurs?

If it isn't it will most likely be a poor conection on the fuel pump relay under the seat. give it a waggle and it will start.

Well I can't hear the fuel pump when I am cranking (starter motor louder than fuel pump), but prior to that it makes all the right noises. If I turn on the ignition and push the throttle 5 times to go into purge mode, the fuel pump definitely runs for about 30 secs and then stops. I was presuming that it reached a required pressure in the lines so it stopped. I will have a look under the seat for anything obviously loose on the relaly

Also - a bit of extra info on the problem. The very first time you try to start it (after a week or 2 of sitting there) it runs for about 3-4 seconds, then dies. Then you have to go through the whole purge routine before it starts. This takes 4 or 5 minutes of purging/cranking. Then she goes, right as rain as if nothing was wrong, for weeks and weeks.
