td5 oil cooler failure

I saw on an Au forum a problem reported whereby the engine oil cooler "corroded" through causing engine oil and coolant to mix with the result that the engine ran out of oil and the now "coolant /sludge mix" was inadequate to cool an oil starved engine.
Reported as a 7yr. old Defender, 170000km. Resulted in a very dead engine.
Could anyone comment on a similar experience, please?

Am with Red on this one...haven't heard of this before. erm...didn't know there was an engine oil cooler on the Td5 Defender?!

Emaze, was this in a Td5 fitted with an oil coiler for Aus, or was it even an Isuzu 3.9l engine fitted in a Defender?

Yes, it is reported as a Defender td5 (www.explorOz.com post id 41118)
The reason my inquiry here is I have a mate with a Disco td5 (I have a Disco300tdi) who is concerned it could happen to him. He has had more than his share of elect/ronic problems compared to a completely clean run with mine. For him build quality has (is) an issue.

Yes oil cooler failures are common here in Aus. The plate cooler splits at the seams allowing oil to contaminate the coolant
