Td5 Rev Counter

scrapper

In Fourth Gear
Hi All,
This may have been covered before, but I haven't found the answer.

I would like to fit a rev counter to my 2006 90 XS Td5. I understand that the engine rpm feed comes from pin 19 on the ECU - but, with ABS / TC fitted this pin is occupied by the engine rpm feed to the ABS system.

I am a bit reluctant to splice into this wire to feed the rev counter as, if I get it wrong, there could subsequently be problems with the ABS.

Is there another source of an engine rpm signal that can be used? If not, what is the best method of splicing into the engine speed ABS wire? Does the ECU support the load of signals to both the ABS and rev counter without any problems?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated before I get the wire cutters out of the toolbox........

Is there an off the shelf kit for this as I would like to do it too.
Will save revving the guts out of it when towing heavy trailers up hill and will be easier for wife to work out when to change gear with overdrive etc ;)

The rev counter I fitted to my 300Tdi (supplied by Low Tension) was advertised for a Td5 and came with fitting instructions and options for a Td5.

It's also suitable for a 300Tdi running it from the 'W' terminal on alternator.

Hi scrapper,

I've got my rev counter from Low Tension and fitted according to instruction. Pin 19 on the ECU. 2 years and no problems with ABS or anything. 2004 Defender TD5.

Cheers,
Ruslan

Hi Highlander,
Croytec do a kit - and you have the option of either a genuine Land Rover Td5 rev counter or a VDO unit which is slightly cheaper. Low tension used to sell rev counters but they seem to have disappeared.

Hi Ruslan,
Sounds like good news - how did you splice into the wire to pin 19?

Hi Scrapper,

I was thinking to disassemble ECU plug, but decided to do it easier. Target point is about 50mm from ECU plug. Simply strip 5-7mm of insulation from the ABS and tacho wires, twist them together and solder.

Cheers,
Ruslan

Hi,

Fitted a genuine td5 rev counter onto my 2000 TD5 90, no problems, discovered that pin 19 was fed through to the dash (I think grey/white) main connector behind the dash (where else?)

It was a simple matter to scotch blok into it and he presto working rev counter, without having to run wire etc.

So may well be worth having a look for it, that being said, you have TC/ABS and so tread carefully, although the output from pin 19 is so small it might not drive a rev counter as well, although the genuine rev counter has an amplifier in it and so may be ok.

Many thanks for the info - I'll have a good look at the main dash connrector and another hunt through the wiring diagram......

Also thanks for the info about the pin 19 output - this is really my main concern as I don't want to muck up the ABS/TC by overloading the output signal.

Regards,

Scrapper

I doubt you'd muck it up scrapper, if the ABS ECU detected a problem (e.g. no speed input) the light would stay on after ignition surely?

So do Land Rover do a rev counter when you say it is genuine ??

Hi, yes there is a genuine one that is fitted to some vehicles (not sure which ones probably more modern XS ones? someone on here will tell you i'm sure!)

These are black marked with a white TD5 logo in the lower portion, also they are designed to work with diesels and so the rev range is lower ie they dont go to 8K so they give proper indicattion on the TD5 not half scale on 'normal' rev counters, also of course, it has a back light).

I moved my dials so its now spedo, rev counter, fuel, temp with the clock on my scorpian (yes i know!) dashboard.

Somewhere on the forum there are threads about other rev counters including ones designed for diesels, ie lower rev range like the TD5 ones, but I think these are white (at least all the ones I found were) and needed to be driven (I think) from the alternator, but if I'm wrong again someone will pick this up.

Ohh yes the guage size is 52mm (standard) so others will fit, and the 'proper' TD5 one is expensive I believe >£80 but they do come up on Ebay (mine cost £38).

I guess you pay your money you take your choice I picked standard as it was easier to install (see my previous post) and just waited until Ebay one

just looked at there is this one

and its white !!!!! with not many days to go...

Usual caution about fleabay needs to be exercised......

Not sure how compatible this one is, wouldn't suit my black dials though.

Resurrecting this thread again. Trying to hook a madman ems3 rpm counter up to pin 19 and csnt get it to work. Its an 04 110 td5. It didn't have a factory rev counter. I get the fake 200 rpm signal when engine off. Any suggestions?
