Temperature Sender

brixton

Shifting Up
Hello,

I have a need for a new water temperature sender as mine is kaputt. I enquired at Famous Four, they have one (new) and its only a couple of quid, but I got this response about the enquiry:

Regarding temp. Senders, there are two types which may be relevant -
FF000154 for a Series 3 original engine, or FF000554 which is the type
for a 2.5D engine - I'm not quite sure which is most appropriate...

I don't know there was a difference in the temperature sender. I do have a 2.5D in my Series, would that mean I choose the 2.5D version? Why is there a difference?

Thanks for any help,

- Tom

The 2.5 (12J) engine was fitted to the 90/110, and so the sender is electrically incompatible with the SIII guage. If you have a 2.25 SIII engine, you just need a SIII guage. However, there are more than one type, with some fitting into the head (late), others into the thermostat housing (early). There are also different threads.

I have a sender that worked fine with my old original SIII guage and my 2.5, but it doesn't work with the new cluster guage (has water and oil temp, as well as fuel quantity). The oil temp sender doesn't work either, though the fuel guage seems fine. I've tested all the wiring, so it's got to be a snder mismatch, even though the guages and senders are Series... You need the year of manufacture, and if you can, open the instrument panel and copy down the part number and serial number of the guage - it should reduce the chances of cockup.

I have had endless problems trying to find out the sender to match my 90 2.25 engine and my series 3 guage. The working sender has FAE3111 stamped on it, but I've been unable to find a compatible LRpart number. I've tried three different LR ones so far without success and even emailed FAE to see if they can help but had no response.

If anyone has an FAE catalogue can you check please!!

good luck, and if you find the right one, let me know please.

Get a standard SIII sender for the year of manufacture, but ensure the threads match.

Hello, thanks for the replies!

Do you happen to know what part this is? I have standard SIII guages but a 2.5 engine.

Thanks,

- Tom
No I don't, but once I egt myself sorted out with a new sender, you can have my existing one (as long as the new one fits the same hole or I can find a suitable plug).

I have just spoken to the manufacturers of my combined gauge, and they say that the existing sender is correct and that I just need to bypass the voltage stabiliser as the whole gauge cluster is meant to run off 12V. Sorry, but it looks like I'll be keeping the existing sender.

That's a shame (for me!) but thanks anyway! Good result for you! :p
I suppose I'll try a few senders, as they're only cheap.
