the 'better' tdi/ gearbox combo

jasper110

Offroader
simply;

200tdi + LT77

or

300rdi + R380

other than cost differences. one day it may end up in my 110 (of i can convince mrs jasper)

thanks.

300 and 380 are better, but the engine mounts would need replacing if you upgrade to the 300/380 as the engine sits much further forward and the mounting system is very different. If you already have a 200 or just a 2.5, go for the 200/77S as this will require no chassis mods.

Engine output is roughly the same, the 200 having less boost but highr CR, and the gearboxes are similar anyway.

Jasper...dont do it mate...keep the V8!!!! :D

As for boxes etc..have to say..the 380 in my 300tdi is very smooth and precise compared to the LT95 in my V8 :)

thanks for the thought, but i'm increasingly thinking that it's time for it to go. the rest of the 110 is in good cond so buying another is out of the question, as well as too expensive.
i had thought of another V8 to give me more get up and go, but i'd still have the associated problems even with the LPG that i currently have(poor range, reduction in boot space, availability of lpg ),and a new (er) gearbox is always nice.

plus alll the thalk of half price motoring is rubbish as LPG costs 50ppl up here, petrol 86ppl, and, i normally got around 17.5mpg petrol, with lpg its 13.5mpg this equates to a cost equivilent of 22.2 mpg. so a diesel is cheaper to run aswell.

well i already gave my 2p in the other thread, so not going over that again. but there are really easy ways to improve the LPG performance/mpg. installing an ignition advance circuit (circa 50 quid) will improve both significantly.
Its down to what you want in the end. But IMHO don't give up on LPG too quickly, especially as you already have it.

Hmm, i would have thought you should get better results with that set up.
Rough figures (cos its hard to keep driving style constant for both tests) I have 22-25 mpg with petrol & 18-22 mpg with LPG. I have no noticable power drop between lpg-petrol. And it cruises smoother at speed on LPG for me.

Have you done a compression test. LPG certainly prefers good compression. (in fact giving it 10:1 or more can have excellent results apparently, but that's not a simple mod)

p.s. oh and i have electonic mixture control, that helps economy. (that can be added as a kit.)

i would be interested to know more about the specifics of your set up. i've seen the electronic upgrade at tinley tech, also the ecomax valve. 22-25 mpg with a V8 seems astounding and in the realms of diesel. 18mpg on gas is more than i've ever had on petrol including tailgating artics on the M74.(well, actually it was 18.9, but you get the point)

i'm lumbered with the low compression engine 8.something:1, upping the compression i've heard about, but then the cost may makes me wonder if i should put that money towards the tdi.

like i said i would be interested in knowing more!
