The Prime Minister still finds it noisy.

The Prime Minister still finds my Series III LWB 2.5 NAD noisy. I already installed the O.D and some fancy UK made mats; and they do help.

Now i was thinking about changing the top to canvas.

Do you guys think a CANVAS roof is gonna be less noisy than the regular aluminium top I got ?

Thanks a lot!

By the way, how is your beauty coming along Snagger ?

Hi armadillo,

I don't think a canvas top will make much difference. It will probably be noisier, or at the very best you will exchange one sort of noise (resonating aluminium!) for another (real road and engine noise!).

Can't remember what set-up you have, but if it is a normal hard top, you could deaden the noise by fitting all the station wagon interior trim, or perhaps even better got for some home made soundproofing - there are a couple of threads I'm sure, if you do a search for soundproofing / noiseproofing.

At the end of the day, a series 3 is noisy so an iPod for the PM might be a better investment ... ;)

Thanks Bernie, I was thinking bout the canvas top because I remember that in a previous Series I completely removed the roof, top-less, like one of those beautiful UK Pink Panters, and hey, it was really nice, no noise and a great feeling.

The set up I got is: 1976 109 two doors original aluminium roof. Modifications for a Sahara trip: 2.5 NAD, rear LR big round axle (I don't know the name), extra LR rear tank, HD electric fan, 1T long shakles, Parabollics + gas dampers, fancy noise mats.
Next mods: performance exhaust, better alternator, oil rad, side jerry can compartment ...

Bernie, one question: Is the pick up roof, like the one in your pic, a better option for the noise. She, the PM would love that. And the kids in the back attached to the seats with ropes !

A Canvas top is noticeably quieter than a full hard top van set-up, however unnecessary noise can be created if the hard top panels are actually loosening up. It's not unknown for the various bolts to slacken through time and vibration.

With a canvas top, you get less vehicle noise but you get wind noise. In my opinion, unless you've got a fully padded out style SW hard top, the Canvas top is the quietest option followed by the truck cab.

Hey yeah the cab itself is quieter ... and warmer! :D But under the canopy it's veeeery noisy, and damp too
