Timing belt....

Accelerating Away
Just done my timing belt today.... EASY!!:D
Only problem I had was getting the crackshaft pully bolt back to 270NM.

Just telling novices, like myself, that it's easy enough todo yourself.

Just make sure you get a crackshaft puller (difflock.com is where i got mine) makes it so much easyer.

Oh and if you get a timing belt "kit" make sure you also get a new water pump seal/gasket.

couple of questions, and looking at your post, thought you'd be the right member to ask
I have a 1995 300Tdi, bought the timing belt from paddocks and want to get it on the car soon.
never done a belt before, but not too afraid to have a go.
i only bought the belt, do i need the kit to do the job properly?
Also, looking at the job, it seems as though all the pulleys, the fan and radiator(s) all have to come off first. Is this the case?
Ta,
Nik.

I would go with the kit, everything you will need (except a water pump gasket) is included. Also didn't the 300tdi need an upgrade on the tensioner (which should be in the kit)?
All the fan and the pullys need to come off. Radiator only if your really short and carn't lean inside:D
You will also need a crankshaft puller, difflock.com sell a good one.

Hope this helps,

Marcus

Yeah i would get the whole kit, i replaced the belt on my 200tdi about a month ago, then one of the pulleys lost the front bearing cover which sliced the belt in half again.
I didnt need a crankshaft puller to do mine, just gave it a little bit of gentle leverage with a tyre lever and it slid off no problem.

You dont need the water pump gasket, no need to take the pump off to get at the cambelt on a 300Tdi. Its all quite straight forward, if you are not taking the radiator out then remember to make alignment marks on the pulleys and the back casing before you take the belt off, there are marks in the casing but if you dont take the radiator out you cannot see them straight on for correct alignment, so make your own on the top edges of the pulleys.
Makes timing the belt much easier.
You will also need a 9mm drill to lock the Diesel pump and a small bolt to lock the flywheel. You can get specialist tools but you can make do with a drill bit and a bolt of the right size.
Buy the kit, costs about £75ish and includes the belt, new idler pulley and tensioner.
Might well be worth changing the camshaft and crankshaft inner/outer seals, they only cost a couple of quid. The only hard bit is getting the pulleys off, if you intend to change the oil seals, again you can buy specialist tools, but a flat piece of steel and a couple of long bolts work a treat.
Its not as daunting as it sounds, you will be surprised how staright forward it is.

Forgot to mention, the timing cover gasket also comes in the kit. There are 2 kits for the 300TDi, stage 1 and stage 2. The stage 1 includes the timing belt back casing (Expensive...over £200:eek: ), the stage 2 is just the belt, idler, tensioner and gasket.
The old 300TDi has a habit of wearing prematurely, it rubs against the cover because of various reasons. You should get away with the Stage 2 kit. I usually change them every 50,000 miles or so to be on the safe side.
