How Do I? Tools for the job

Big white one

In Second Gear
I am just about to replace the viscous coupling on my defender 300tdi 110 I, I've studied the procedure in my LR manual, and was wondering what tools would surfice to aid removal of the coupling other than the special LR tools described in the manual. I notice that the spanner required needs to be quite slim, But dont know the size without trying to measure it with a ruler.

hi big white one

spanner size i believe is 32mm, the thin slim one you mention you can get from halfrauds. also the thread undo's anticlockwise

On the 200 its CLOCKWISE to undo, its a left hand thread

spanner is a funny shape seen a few around for about £5

seen it done with a cold chisel but not recommed

On most if not all viscious fans it's clockwise as that is the direction the engine spins if a normal thread it would come loose and fall off. I know cause the 1st one i ever tried to take off I destroyed trying to undo it whilst all the time I was tightening it. Also snapped a snapon 2ft bar doing the same thing to an escort front hub nut. "Doh" :D

The TD5 is right hand thread.

Look at the fan blades, which ever way the fan goes to draw air through the radiator, that is the way it undoes.

Another way to check, if the pulley runs in the belt vees, it's left hand thread, if it runs on the back of the belt, it's right hand thread.

Guys remember the old saying;
Righty tighty,lefty loosey,

or was it the other way round :D

Cheers, it is a lefthand thread though, which should mean to loosen it will mean turning it clockwise, but can anyone confirm its 32mm, I am in Spain at the moment so fortunately dont have a halfrauds to go to, however am now faced with the prospect of asking for a slim built 32mm spanner in Spanish.... any ideas how I go about that ?

Could try cold chisel, good hard crack with hammer and its off don't recommend this but seen it done

I thinks it is 32mm use a bit of thick card and have several goes trying to get an exact fit then measure the card I use this method to measure many odd size nuts etc. Then make one out of card with all the bends test it then show the guy what you want

Old punched out bike spanners used to fit

Where in Spain are you and have you got it sorted? If you are near us (Andalucía) we can help. Redhand's description is brill, but they might want to go through the usual Spanish palava of describing exactly what you want to do.....Quiero una llave..... para quitar.... sí, más estrecha....etc etc. If you are fixed disregard this post.:p K&A
