if the rope was a more sensbile length the disco would have dragged the car straight long before it hit the post.
When rallying if i have to tow a car out of stage on a rope i use a strop between my rear eyes and a 3m strap which puts the car about 3.5m of my rear. the car will go exactly where i do although it could also have been prevented if the driver of the disco was watching his mirrors.
