Track rod ends threading

Changing the TREs on the tie rod between each wheel at mo. I'm presuming one end has a LH thread and the other is a RH thread? I'm also presuming gripping the tube in a large vice, heating the end and using a long bar to get the old TRE out? ta muchly for feedback.
 
IIRC the track rod ends are handed, yes.

You shouldn't have much trouble getting them off, though. We snapped our rod in the middle of nowhere and used the pliers of a multitool to grip the rod. A strong grip and elbow grease had the end unwound in a few minutes. They'd been on there for a couple of years since a Dan bar was fitted - as long as you remember to undo the compression clamp nut and bolt the thred shouldn't be too tight to get it off quite easily.

Count the turns as you remove them, or measure the length of thread sticking out first. You can then quickly set the new ends to the same and your tracking shouldn't be too far out.
 
Thanks, I'm removing the whole bar and was going to drill 2 holes in a piece of timber that the tre's will fit into. Then when I refit I can use the holes lining up to confirm the number of turns counted.
 
Another good way it measure the full length of the track rod bar. As for undoing them once u have removed the locking clamp, rest it on something hard and hit the tube end with a hammer, turning it round as you go, this will crack the rust grip.

I just changed mine on the Disco at the weekend. Mine were quite stubborn, had to give a good tap all the way round with a hammer and some heat.

On the Disco, the drag link ends are handed, the track rods are not. This is because it has a damper and so has an adjuster on the RH side as you cannot turn the whole rod.

Good tip to clean the threads before fitting the new ones, make a thread cleaner by cutting a groove down the threads of the old TRE's and screw them in and out, also apply lots of copper grease to make the job easier next time.

Despite carefully measuring, I am still going to get the tracking checked properly.

Yup! Spot on :D , and FWIW the TRE on the left of the vehicle "should" have the left hand thread, and the right side vice versa.

Anothe tip I was told is to pour a cupful of old Oil or summat down the tube before fitting the TREs', apparently makes future removal tasks a little easier :) .
 
The last time i changed my tre's i put a bar on the old track rod and turned it out that way , it was seized solid . When it eventually came out the threads were full of rust . Gave the bar a good clean out with WD40 and then smothered the new tre in copper grease and wound it all the way in .Then unwound it all the way out , smothered it in copper grease again and then set it up properly and refitted it . Need to get it checked as it feel's like it is slightly out .
Don't forget to centralise the steering box . I did that and had a few head scratching moments as to why i couldn't get it all to refit :D .
 
I cleaned out the grooves in the rod ends a best as pos, and twisted the end of my biggest flat-blade screwdriver in the gap to open it just a little before dowsing with WD40. After an hour in soak I was able to undo with a pair of plumbers grips on the rod and bare hands on the TRE.

Note to self: Buy a vice. Soon.
