transfer box

bertrert

In Third Gear
Hi, can anyone tell me if it is possible to remove the transfer box without removing the gearbox (Lt77) on my 200 tdi, also i have a replacement transfer box from a 1988 range rover and the only difference i can see is the handbrake mechanism, so if i change the handbrake mechanism will this fit my landy?

Ok yes you can separate the 2 gearboxes without taking the LT77 off.

2ndly there is a difference between your defender LT230 and the RRCs LT230 and that is the ratio, the defenders being 1:1.44 and the RRCs being 1:1.22, so if you fit the RRCs one your truck will be slower to get to speed but once at that speed your engine will be doing less RPMs than with your old box. Plus you'll find you may slow down more on steep hills.

You should be able to swap the handbrake mechanism over!

this is exactly what i did with mine, same box (range rover 1:2 ratio) getting to speed is no problem although 4th seems to last ages :D the hand brake mechanism is'nt as straight forward as you might think....the defende rbracket will need two holes tapped in the new transfer box (i couldn'y be @rsed so did without the two bolts :D although i did have to drill holes in the old bracket to fit) it seems to work fine though.

getting the old one out was a two man job (with rope) they arn't really heavy but are a pain to move about in the tight spaces.

Top tip!! take the drum off the back when you remove the old one...I fould that we had to rotate the tranferbox around the shaft so that we could get enough clearance from the body work and stuff.

If you need any pointers give me a shout

Cheers
Dave
