Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or export

1966landrover10

Accelerating Away
Just fitted a new Twin box Stainless exhaust system to my 109. Got it from Rimmers, who seem to be the only ones selling it. But the anorak in me wants to know, which vehicles had thse fitted?

No it ain't life or death, just curious.

Incidentally I'm going to put an ACR head cam SU carb etc on mine (fitted a 2.5 petrol) and Roland at ACR siad the twin box was better tahn the single for this purpose, his kit actuall replaces the stock single box as a culprit for gas flow, so on his suggesting I fittted the twin box. Quieter too. But yo oil burners might liek a noise reduction too.

Rumour has it they were fitted ambulances? is thsi true? Anoraks unite, and in your best nasally tone, apply here.

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

i could be wrong but i thought they where fitted to the 2.6 models and possibly the V8 models aswell but not sure.

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

fitting twin silencers was an option for series 3 88's and 109's with the 2.25 engine of either flavour.

however, im sure twin silencers will have been fitted as standard for the v8 and 2.6

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Ah, sounds about right. So, I'm not the only anorak here....

Rimmers do offer these for 6 & V8 cylinder models. I looked in my Haynes (and the S3 parts books I have) and there's no mention for 2.25. If it had not been for Rimmers selling them, I would not have known they existed. I've looked in the option lists, also no mention. More, I do not know. I've spent heaps of time sound-proofing - twin box definite ly makes my 109 quieter, and it is already 'Classic FM' quiet. If being able to drive a Seriesa nd hear yourself think is your bag, recommended. Anyone know where the option is lisetd in official LR 'bumpf'?

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Jeez, I don't know who's more sad? Me for asking or you for answerin'. An option. 'Kin 'ell, there is a God (I've been told, so it must be true) and there in Blk & White we have proof.

And Persil washes Whiter.

How it must of worked back then when you strolled into your dealership? Did you really specify an exhaust? 'Spose we msut have done, My oh my, how the world has cahnged. Its not offered on Rimmers site for S2 so I guess it was an S3 only option.

I've found anoter supplier of the twin box.

http://www.ashleycompetitionexhausts.com/

Do a tubular manifold too. Looks cheaper than ACR version as well. £208.09

Rimmers list but are out of stock of 2.25 stainless tubular manifold. Theres comes with the whole sytem. i wonder if they all come from Ashley?

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

only a single box on the 109 2.6 - just replaced mine :)

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Seems it was a dealer option for 4 cylinder only

Oh dear I've seen it, I typed "there" instead of "their", outside of the 'possesive'. My English teacher must be spinning, and I'll be driving a plastic 90 if my brain rots some more. Also expalins why they won't complete my registration at http://ollr.10.forumer.com. I'm too dim, and I told 'em I took the chequer plate & and the w*nker-wheels off as well. Still they refuse me.

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Just seen this. In the Dutch Ambulance manual - S3 Ambulances were not fitted with twin box systems, least not for the Dutch market they weren't. Here shown as single can/single box system. Jeez... if you can't have one specified in an ambulance, what did you have to do to get one?! You did get an anti-roll bar though

Pretty please. Now then, do I get my 'anorak-badge'?

Well done Jeff, so I don't get my badge then, swiftly out-flanked, out anoraked.

But now tha raises more questions, are we saying thsi was standard on export and optional to UK customers. Fitted to vehicles for Austria, Belgium,Denmark,France,Holland and Luxembourg. Why would an export vehicle get a better spec than UK market models or is that a stupid question?

I notice Craddocks also list SILENCER 109 SERIES 3 MILITARY AMBULANCE (577819) That one must be sweeping the nation...

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Standard fit for those countries, normally due to emission/noise regulations.

Military vehicles are different again, MOD specifications differ from civil and may be affected by NATO or BAOR requirements in series models.

Less of the anorak, more of the inherited manuals that came with Heather!!

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

If I'd thought about it, and I didn't, twas but a stupid question, has to be about noise regs in those markets. I know hteh ambulances had an anti-roll bar which messed with rear tank position, which i am guessing fouled up the 'huast too?

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

SWB twin can is different as well, can supply pic of the system if anyone needs it.

No pics of military system available.

Re: Were Twin Box / silencer exhausts for 88 & 109 Series Land Rover an option or exp

Yes I've seen pix of teh 88 twin on Rimmers site.

Twin Box systems it would appear are not a seller, even to enthusiasts like us, which surprises me, and lets face it, I love it, but you'd have to be an 'enthusiast' (read mad) to run a series these days. And mines a daily-drive. You can't take yourself too seriously driving these things.

Rimmers sold off SS 88 systems last month for £150. Which miffed me soemwaht bearing in mind I' piad over 300.00 for my 109 version from them. Still... its called life 'spose.

Also list (sold out) a sports manifold system for a 88. in SS. Not a seller either, it would seem.

It must be only me tha likes his LR quiet.
