Three years ago the goverment negoiated new contracts with the GPs which enabled them to opt out of providing night time and weekend cover. Since then the GPs income has soared by 60% to nearly £120,000 a year for effectively half the service they used to provide, A+E have been swamped by patients previously dealt with by the GPs (putting the trusts in more debt) and millions have been spent on night services and drop-in clinics.

The goverments answer, more cash for the GPs to open people friendly hours:banghead:

And they wonder why the NHS and other public services are in such a state:( They seem to think they can just keep throwing our money at problems untill they are solved.

And boast on the radio that they're proud to have done it. I've been working in the health service for thirty years and not a whole lot has changed.

Roger.

Was thinking about you today, apparently they are putting one of those 3 Teslar MRI units in at Singleton Hospital, Swansea.

You could take the odd liberty with a 1 Tesla magnet, you have to be careful with a 1.5T magnet - but a 3T magnet is a real animal. A real bra puller. :D

Roger.

PS: I fixed an EMIScanner at the Singleton - about 29 years ago!

But didn't the government with their new contract basically make the GP's self employed business men.

Yes they earn £100,000 + per year but their surgeries are now run by them and not the local health authority so of course they will only run the profitable areas of their practice, as it would seem the government wanted them to.

our local GP was offered a chance to opt out of the "night" service
his view was as we are 3 miles from aboyne where the service is based it wasn't worth it
he opted into the night service and at least 3 people in the village owe their lives to this decision!
that is one of the reasons I am reluctant to leave here!

Nope the vast majority of GPs have always been self-employed, hence why they are "Partners" in the practice.
