What's the difference between a rascist comment and....

Mogwyth

Posting Guru
.........an good old fashioned insult.

I know most have no sympathy for her but as has been mentioned Jan t Street Porter was arreseted over racial behaviour to her nieghbour it is allegded she called her a "black b1tch" in the heat of a row over parking, she had just returned from burying her sister.

Now can anyone tell me the difference between that and me being called a "fat barsteward" or my father in law a "old git" in the same circumstances.

Where do we draw the line between a descriptive insult and rascism, surely racism has to be against a race not an individual.

rac·ism (rā'sĭz'əm)
n.
  1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
  2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
What do you think? Are you a racist if you insult an individual?.

Perhaps it would be simpler to change the law and simply make it illegal to insult any one based on a charactoristic (sp)?

if you insult someone using their creed , rece etc its a racist insult.
if you insult someone because they are a dick it isnt.

As Janet called her a Black Bitch, she is making a point of her skin colour, so it's a Racist remark. If she called her a Bitch, then it's an insult.

An Asian Lad accused me of being Racist once, when I was an RAC Patrolman. I pointed out that I'm not Racist, I just don't like You. His Father and Brother were cery nice, friendly people, he was a complete scumbag.

There's no difference. She used the colour of someone's skin to insult them. In your two examples a person's size/weight, and age, are being used to insult them. All three are unacceptable if said with malice and intent to insult.

To be honest Bill, I think it's a bit far-fetched to say she was using the word 'black' as a descriptive term. She could easily have called her a bitch without making any reference to her skin colour.

For my money, saying what she did is racist abuse full stop.

Playing Devil's advocate here, but if she'd called her neighbour "a bitch" there wouldn't've been a problem. If she'd referred to a neighbour as "a black woman" there wouldn't've been a problem (I am under the impression that "black" is the preferred term for people of Afro-Carribbean origins, please correct me if I am wrong).

Now, the fact that she called her neighbour "a black bitch" - is that necessarily racist? Surely the insult lies in calling her a bitch, the fact that she was black and the adjective was used - does that make it worse?

I agree that calling her other names that are exclusively used as a racist insult (the "n" word, the "c" word etc.) would be taken as a racist attack.

I don't think it's necessarily a case of political correctness gone mad, but I don't think it makes JSP a card-carrying member of the BNP/KKK...

It is perfectly simple to royally and absolutely p*ss some one off without losing your temper, using racist remarks or even insulting them.

EG: whilst waiting to go straight across a roundabout an asian gentleman with his wife and kids, pulled up alonside of me in the left turn lane not only did he not turn left but he cut across the front of me did a 360 round the roundabout and followed me up the road. Now obviously I was a bit miffed at his attempt to run me in to the roundabout , especailly as it is concrete and three feet high. Using sign langauge i demonstrated my concerns.

I pulled over a couple of hundred yards further on as I was visiting a friend. He pulled over and started shouting at me from the comfort of his vehicle. I made several choice comments about his driving skills and suggested he allow his wife to drive As I didn't believe she could probably do any worse.

At this point he attempted to get out of his MPV and got himself tangled in his seatbelt. He obviously hadn't engage his handbrake as he started to roll backwards whilst still tangled in the seatbelt. His wife stopped the vehicle and dragged him back into the car. Where they had an heated arguement. whilst I took the p*ss out of his accident.

At no point did I mention his colour, creed, religion (from his and his wives clothing I assumed they were muslims) nor did I use any foul langauge as he had children in the car(the sign langauge was a knee jerk reaction to almost been killed). However I had no problem letting him what I thought of him his attitude and his driving. The fact I never resorted to his level. Shouting, swearing, and using racial insults (called me a F**king English pig) upset him more than the comments I was making.

By the way Mogwyth you probably know the roundabout as it's the one in Blaenau Ffestiniog, heading towards Dolweddelyn/betws-y-coed.

but she brought up the womans colour in her insult , most unracist people wouldnt have given her colour a second thought.
you cant pass off racism as ignorance , well not in this case anyway.
she made a point of pointing out the persons colour while insulting her.

racist unsults like this , and racial hatered such as saying all black people are bitches are two different things but just as bad as eachother.

lets be honest though , if she needed to stoop this low to insult someone she must not have much in the way of wit between her ears.

I'm wondering if I'm predujuce against certain foods. I have an aversion to brussel sprouts, curries and spicey foods.
This can have an affect on how I behave around some people. My other half for instance has to arrange when he want's to eat a curry or spicey chinese meal as I won't go within 20ft of him if I can smell what's been eaten.

Bloomin eck Alice - are we married ?. That's me you've just described :D .

I think the whole thing has got totally out of hand , i really do . Supose someone called me a haggis when i was down in England ( as my in laws always do :D ) , am i going to go ape and start burning English flags and shouting about persecution ?. Course not , even if they meant offence by it i'd call them something back . Go to the Police , burn flags , question the chancellor about it ?. Don't be so bloomin childish :o .

I was called 'a fecking tourist' a couple of weeks ago at work, referring to my recent move to Wales, but it was all said in jest and that is how I took it, no offence taken:)

cheers, Tim

From my involvement in education - an incident is flagged as racist when "the victim feels it is a racist incident"

For the record, I am distinctly uncomfortable with that definition.
