15P's are generally better as they have a different cylinder head design.

10P's had 2 fuel rail drillings in the head, and there wasn't much metal between them, they used to spring a leak into the sump. Later 15P's has only one drilling and an external pipe.

There were other differences too, fuel cooling etc, but i'm not too genned up on that. I'm sure Ian (Porny) can explain better.

I think 15P's came with the flashable ECU as well (although you can retrofit one to an earlier engine), handy if you want to play with fuel mapping.

Strength wise, I think both are equally as good.

Not all 10P's were bad though... my old company car 110 was a 10P, and my parents still run it, with 144000 miles on it, the engine hasn't missed a beat.

Could anyone please tell me how to tell the difference in the two engines? been looking at getting a td5 the last couple of weeks :)

Cheers

Easiest way is ask for the log book and check the engine number. You should do that anyway to check the number on the engine to make sure it's the same one.

15p is after 2002, in a defender and a disco 2 > both on the facelift, the defender has the uprated dash and the D2 is the facelift lights

I am stuck with an ebay question that asks me 100KW or 102KW engine. I know my enine number is a 15P model but does this mean it is the 100KW or the 102Kw?

I 'think' (happy to be corrected) if you check the engine number it will be:

TD5 Engine no: 15P92222A (my engine number with the digits anonymised)

so the first 3 are the engine type - a 15P Engine
