Bottle jack

I'll have a look at that. He said it was unused, but anything could have happened before he bought it!

Normally 2 stage jacks work on both at the same time, the hydraulic pressure just sort of equalises and one may move before the other doesn't really matter which. If you can get it moving and the damage is only at the top end of the ram you might be able to fit some kind of stop to it so the score doesn't rip the seal apart. David

I took out the jacky-uppy-piston part and cleaned the valve assembly underneath, also the letty-downy screw.
Then put some ATF in it to test and up it went!

What loked like scratching on the shaft was just oil stains. There was a couple of tiny marks but they were above the level of the seal so Ive rubbed them off with some wetNdry just to make it look tidier.

Im leaving it with a bit of pressure on it and will get some jack oil when Im next up the tractor place, drain and refill it.

Holy moly just how high do you need to lift a Sprinter van :rofl:

hard pressed to justify spending the time and buying the materials
I think this is a big problem these days.
I used to enjoy making my own stuff just for the journey of creation and the use of my skills etc.
But when you price it all up and certainly you factor in the time, it just never seems worth it and that is always depressing!
I suppose if you bought the jack for pennies at a car boot and had the steel laying about, it would be worth a Saturday to knock it together just for some personal enjoyment.

That sums it up in a lot of cases I think..
Most of the stuff that I would make now would be quite specialist and generally tools for use in the workshop and most probably machine specific that can't really bought..
The time that goes into the manufacture would mean it would be hard to put a price on them.. šŸ‘

If you can get friendly with a local steel merchant and/ or a scrapyard you can often pick up bits of useful steel for nothing or pennies. David

We have two local fabricators who no longer like going to customer sites for small jobs but they do hold all sorts of off cuts of materials which they are quite willing to sell on. I just pop in and we have a rummage to find what I want (or close to it). Otherwise it is the 6m lengths or full sheets etc from the local stockholders at full price.
