I'm keen to try molasses, it combines with the rust and makes it water soluble. Apparently its great for engine blocks as you can de-rust inside and it doesn't matter if some is left in crevices as its not acidic.
on I like an ammer. The thick rust flakes are best chiselled off first with a needle gun or manually with hammer and chisel.
I usually use phosphoric acid after too, unless it's for bolts, then it gets Flag metal primer which is very thin and gives a good blacking. Zinc type bolts get phosphoric acid then sprayed with zinc primer.Any steel parts I now take off the land rover get electrolysis, phosphoric acid solution, de-greased, abraided then painted with red oxide.
