GLOW PLUGS

Charteris92

In Third Gear
Hi all,

Needing some help and recommendations.

I have successfully changed 2 of the 4 GP's on my Freelander 1, however the remaining 2 have broken at the nut. The car is now not driveable (I believe) as it gushes smoke from the plugs when rebuilt and started.

Can anyone recommend someone who is able to extract the broken GP's, preferably remote and local to Maidstone, Kent.

Thank in advance.

I obviously don't know your area, so cant recommend anybody, but I had a look on Google and saw there were a couple of mobile 'specialists' which is maybe what you'll need if it's belching out smoke from the glow plug ports, its obviously not driveable like that.

There are plug removal tools available, have a look on Amazon. Whether you want to risk that or not I don't know.

I had one stuck in a vauxhall once, it sheared off and left half of it in the head. Like yours, blowing exhaust gases. I put a bolt in and tightened it up, which worked as it would start on three. It left the plug warning light on though, but that went off when the engine was warm, shut it off and restart, then no lamp lit.

That was, however, pretty much a scrap car. It was legal, and had an MOT, but.... šŸ˜

I hate too be mr doom and gloom .. but there is a good chance the head will have to come off to get those plugs out .. so plan to have the head off .. if the first attempts to remove the broken plugs does not work .. you want to pull the center electrode out first .. the advice for plug removal to try and get them out without snapping the body away from the threaded part is to get the vehicle hot first .. and then remove the plugs .. but heater plug removal theses days can be a nightmare of just how many will shear trying to take them out... after the central probe is removed ... well you could tap a torx drive bit into the hole left by the removed probe..(heater element)... a left handed drill bit .. and hope it catches and unwinds the plug threaded part that is left there.. but you will probably end up drilling the center out to just leave a very thin shell of the plug left.. but a steady hand and do not drill off center and damage the thread in the head ..lots of patience ..a small sharp punch to try and fold the casing that is left in on itself ... it would be a good idea to have a tap around you .. just to clean up the thread in the head once you have removed the old bits.. i do not envy you one bit on this job .. just remember slow and steady .. if you have to walk away from it because it has become frustrating .. then so be it... but perseverance .. does pay off some times
