Identifying brake shoes

Oneuponedown

Shifting Up
Hi folks,

As ever, if anyone is able to help I’d really appreciate it.
So far I’ve bought 2 sets of brake shoes, expecting them to fit and they are not right.

It’s driving me crackers.

Here’s a picture of an old shoe and a new one that doesn’t fit.
If anyone can enlighten me as to which shoes I should be purchasing, I’d be enormously grateful.

They are rear drums off my 88 with 11 inch drums.

Cheers

OUOD

Hi Steve,

So far I've ordered RTC3417 and accidentally some 10' shoes! But the I think the RTC3417 are for 2 cylinders rather than a single cylinder at the top.

From memory the linings on the 11" shoes are handed ie the linings are offset and will only fit one way.
Can you view your shoes and see the differences.
Your back plates show too adjusters so like the diagram I posted.
Here is a pic of the shoes in place note the offset lining position this is offside wheel RH drive as shock adsorbers shows.

An 88 will only have 11" rear drums if someone has changed them at some point. Later (post 1980) 88s had 11" front drums but still had 10" rear drums. Older 88s had all 10" drums. David

Thanks folks for all of your advice and suggestions

I think the main issue is that the purchased shoes don’t have the same number of holes as the originals, so there is no way to attached the springs.

I think I need to order STC2797

Which look identical to my original set.

What vehicle do you actually have and if a Series landrover have the axles been changed?
Note the part number supercedes the part I quoted

Looks like you have a 11" LWB rear brake set up, so not surprisingly you need 11" LWB rear shoes (STC2797).

You really should consider down sizing the rears though. On a SWB the 11" rears can be quite strong and cause rear lockups which can be a bit hairy when you don't need it.

Mine originally came set up like yours and I restored the correct 10" with 1 1/4" cylinders for post 80 style SWB front TLS set up vehicles. It is more than adequate without making brake balance a bit sketchy.
