On Saturday, I took my mate petrofaclad on a tour of some local lanes.
He recently became the owner of a 50th Anniversary Discovery 300Tdi, and, in his own words, "wanted to get it dirty".
Ha! He should have known better than to ask, given that the last time he came for a bit of off roading I tried to knock him senseless with the roof of my Ninety...
Anyway here is the poor innocent victim, and his (very nice) Disco:
We started at Copley Dale, and drove the lane down into Great Hucklow, and from there, went to the lane which runs round the back of the Barrel Inn at Bretton.
Here we are enjoying the view:
Then we we went up Sir William Hill Road, past the TV mast:
And from there down into the village of Eyam, and then out of Eyam on Tideswell Lane:
Then we crossed the main road, and went up Thunderpit Lane and Moisty Lane onto Black Harry Lane, and then we drove up over Longstone Moor, and down Moor Road towards Great Longstone. I had originally planned to go along and down Bramley Lane, buth this is now a restricted Byway, so we didn't.
Instead, although I hadn't originally planned it, we drove up Chertpit Lane from the bottom. I'd forgotten how narrow that was, and the two Discoveries only just fitted between the walls in places, and we had to stop and do some dry-stone walling at one point, as the wall had been pulled down across the track.
It was in the lower part of Chertpit Lane that petrofaclad sustained some damage to his nice shiny Disco, when the rubber strip on his nearside side step was torn off. We didn't realise until we stopped higher up for a ciggy.
Here he is inspecting the damage:
After Chertpit Lane was the end of the grand tour, so we returned home and fixed his rubber strip with some self tappers.
We had a good time, and despite his mishap petrofaclad enjoyed himself. We definitely got his vehicle dirty, and we saw some great scenery on the way.
The weather was kind, with only a short sharp shower whilst we were on the way home. It's amazing where a standard spec Discovery on road biased tyres will go without having to even think about locking the centre diff, although to be fair I had planned the route to be be interesting but not extreme.
